IAnything goes: Standards for distributed information architecture by Jeff Lash
Jeff uses an example of having photos printed and how consistent and standardized meta-data would be helpful. I myself have often times thought of this very thing and how great it would be to have many different systems working together in this way. To a degree, as Jeff points out, we already have this with XML, RSS and the like. He goes on to talk about XFML, of which I am only passing familiar with, and how this might become a standard for this type of metadata. In any case - it’s an interesting read, and brings up many topics, ideas and questions.
Keep it Simple: Fluid Thinking from Peter-Paul Koch
Graceful degradation, sounds nice doesn’t it? That’s what happens when your beautifully designed site, which you’ve coded with XHTML and CSS 2.0 works just fine in NS 4.75. Yeah, maybe it looks like crap, but your readers can access the content and use the navigation. Fluid thinking is about using the changeable nature of the Web to your advantage. We can’t always do this, I know from experience that there are times it has to display properly in out dated browsers or you don’t get paid, but hey - it’s an interesting way of thought.
