Let's talk a little sports.

So the Mariners are out of it, the Seahawks are headed the same way and it seems aside from my 2-0 fantasy football team (who is the next Wilson to step to the plate and get smacked?) the only thing worth talking about sportswise here in Seattle right now is my favorite franchise - the Sonics.
Ok, nobody cares about my fantasy football team, so it’s just the Sonics.
It seems like Rashard Lewis is going to sign, and that’s a good thing. Is he worth 60 Million? (Is anyone worth that much?) Well - I don’t think so, but then again, who could the get to replace him??
Then we have my favorite player of all time, GP (are you with me???).
Gary Payton seems to be a bit unhappy. He wants a contract extension. He feels a bit disrespected (I’ll let anyone disrespect me for 9 mil - any time) and he doesn’t like being told everything second hand. Now - if it were me I’d go ahead and reward Gary for everything he’s done as a Sonic and give him an extension, but the Sonics have been very consistant about contract dealings, choosing to wait until a player has finished out his deal to resign him. Why should they change now?
(Well the fact that GP has done more for the Sonics than any single player might be a good reason but beside the point.)
I guess the Sonics want to keep their options open, and why not, they have had their hands tied my the likes of Vin Baker and Jimmy Mac for years. What really gets me about this whole thing is that GP talks like he might sit out - and then he talks about respect. Payton is currently under contract, wouldn’t sitting out be a sign of disrespect to the Sonics and their fans?
Anyway, I don’t think Howard Schults build his coffee empire being an idiot. He’ll go down to Oaktown, meet with Gary, explain the situation and everything will be fine. Hopefully ‘shard will sign and we can get to talking about the only team in Seattle this year that might be fun to watch.
Go Sonics!
