From SGML to XHTML.

Found this over at Dive Into Mark.

The Secret Life of Markup by Steve Champeon offers a brief history of markup and some very convincing arguments for Web Standards. While reading this I reflected to my amazement how many Web designers and developers still use font tags and nested tables to add a presentation layer to their content. I can see how it might be a hard habit to break, but it’s one that if broken can and will save time and effort in the future. Down at the hospital I’m constantly going though legacy code and cleaning it up, making messy HTML into clean, clear XHTML. And while - as I’ve pointed out before - I can’t always get it to validate, I can get rid of the font tags and all that non-sense. If you start doing this now you should be able to avoid this drudgery.
