An exceprt from the book Information Architecture: An Emerging 21st Century Profession by Earl Morrogh can found over at Boxes and Arrows.
In this excerpt, Mr. Morrogh is trying to frame IA in such away as to add history to it, in order to give it context to those who might take it for granted, among other things. In doing this he speaks about the architecture metaphor in what I feel is a very enlightening way, explaining how “wayfinding” and “navigating” and that sense of space and physicality relate to information and infospaces. As one who has tried to explain this before, this helps quite a bit. His version is a bit, um, deep, for my tastes, but it’s a start. He goes on to expand on that metaphor and explain how it relates to the craft of Information Architecture.
Speaking of that craft, I became a member of the Asilomar Institute for Information Architecture yesterday.
