The Name's Keith.

December 11, 2002 | Comments 3 Comments

So, for some reason, long ago, I decided to make my e-mail address dkr@7nights.com (have fun spammers - I get so much crap it just dosen’t matter anymore). That was way back, like 1996 or so, and about as much thought was put into it as was put into the name of my domain. I picked 7nights.com because at the time numbers came up higher on a search list than letters, and there wasn’t much good left, oh yeah — and I couldn’t think of anything. I’m sure some of you can understand my plight.

Anyway, the nickname, for lack of a better word, “dkr”, is my initials. My name is David Keith Robinson. Because my parents couldn’t agree on what my first name was I’ve had to deal with all sorts of headaches. I go by Keith. My first name is David. Now was that so hard? Well, let me tell you — it’s been a pain at times.

Shit — when I worked for Boeing they made my e-mail address keith.x.robinson@boeing.com — I guess they just couldn’t figure it out that I went by my first name and that “k” was also my middle initial. Anyway - that spawned all sorts of nicknames, so did the choice of 7nights.com as my domain. Many people have identified me with that, so I think I’ll keep it. Anyway. Those of you who read this and use to work with me will remember all the fun we had with names like “Dr. X”, and “The Dark Night” and just “X”. It was fun. Oh, and then there are all the people that mistake me for Mike Metzger.

Ahhh, yeah. So that brings me to my point. Since way back when I’ve always signed my on Web related communications, and things like Asterisk* entries with the nickname “dkr” — my initials — and I realized the other day that it seemed like people who I communicate with had taken to calling me that. I thought to myself, “Hmm, that isn’t very personal, or very friendly, maybe I should change that.”

One of the reasons why I started this site was to make friends (and influence people - hah) so I figured it would be better to use my name, the one my friends call me.

It’s strange how my e-mail address and my domain name sort-of became who I was. Like a persona. Now, I’ve made no bones about the fact that I don’t want to get too personal on my site, but I don’t want to give a false impression of who I am either.

To make a long story short (I’m sure the faithful 9 readers are saying “too late” about now) the name’s Keith, and I’ll be going by that from now on. I don’t think I’l change the e-mail address, but heck, one step at at time.

Oh yeah, on a different note, I’ve posted some new photos over at Almost Wordless with the caveat that there are more to come. I wish I had more time, but my day job has been crizazy of late.
