Y: The Last Man

December 20, 2002 | Comments 1 Comments

Last night I sat down with a pint of Guiness, some Badly Drawn Boy via the iPod and a new comic book called Y: The Last Man.

Ever thought it would be cool to be the last man on Earth?? Sounds kinda fun at first. Now really think about it. Yikes is right!

Man, what a good book. This is why I like comics. It has everything a good comic book should have. Meaningful and good looking artwork. Clear, clever and fluid scripting. But most important a kick ass story. It made me think, laugh out loud, cringe and gasp - all in the 30 minutes it took me to get through the trade paperback which collects the first 5 installments. It must have been well thought out and well researched, kudos to the author, Brian K. Vaughan. I think he’s got a comic masterpiece brewin’ here.

I’ll give you a very brief overview:

It’s about an escape artist named Yorick who has just pulled up the biggest feat ever - escaping death. For some reason, when every living thing with the Y chromosome is suddenly killed, Yorick and his Monkey, Ampersand, are spared.

That’s just the beginning. You’ve got a lost love, an aggressive Israeli soldier, a super-model turned body harvester, blood thirsty Amazons, cloning, political intrigue, a chick named Hero, magic jewelry and motorcycles. All that and more, and we’re only into the sixth installment. There still no clue as to why all the males were killed, who done it, or where it’s all going.

Ah, gotta love it. If you are into good stories, check it out.
