The Golden Mean.

January 31, 2003 | Comments 1 Comments

The design of my first ever portfolio site, done back in 1996 with FutureSplash (remember that?), was based on the Golden Mean —  a mathematical equation that is also called the Golden Rule or Golden Ratio. I’ve looked to it for inspiration ever since - many of my designs are based on grid systems. You can view my initial mock-up of the Daisy Bead Company site for evidence of that.

It was taught to me by Donald Duck. No, really.

Well, anyway - I came a cross a nice little article (via DesignWritings) that talks all about the Golden Mean and how it relates to nature, art and science.  A nice read.

The article on the “Golden Mean” and applications was outstanding. Thank you. Another “golden” is the “golden rule” with a little detail below.

Algorithmic composition dates to around 1026, when Guido d’Arezzo used vowels in the text of a choral piece to determine the pitches in the melody. Then in the 1400’s Guillaume Dufay also used algorithmic techniques.

In the structure of medieval education under the name of the Seven Liberal Arts, mathematical knowledge was used within architecture and music and this complex interaction is what made the Gothic cathedral perceivable.
