Web Standards a bunch of crap?

January 13, 2003 | Comments 0 Comments

Mark Pilgrim is pissed off and I can’t say as I blame him. Seems that he’s been trying his damnest to make sure his site adheres to every W3C recommendation out there and with XHTML 2.0 they are going to be leaving him hanging on a few things.

I’ve talked about this very thing before, and, while I feel for Mark, I’m not really surprised. Standards are great in theory — in practice, as Mark’s situation clearly points out, they aren’t always the right thing. That said, I imagine after he cools down a bit, he’ll realize that it’s not really all that bad and by keeping his site standard and all that, he’s still way ahead of the game.

Yeah, he might have to drop his cite tags and do some rework, but just think of what the poor schlub who’s still coding non-valid HTML 4.0 and what he’s going to have to do down the road.
