Payton for Allen.

February 20, 2003 | Comments 5 Comments

Wow, the Sonics just made a blockbuster deal. Not one that I am at all happy with. The deal is the ‘supes get Ray Allen, Joel Przybilla and Kevin Ollie for Gary Payton and Desmond Mason. Looks like a very bad trade to me, G.P. and Mas are my 2 favorite players and they are (with Brent Barry) the only players that bring it every night. Not to mention by far the two fan favs.

I do like Allen, and I think this would have been a good deal if Mas had been left out. I mean Ollie and Przybilla?? Come on. Ollie is now the Sonics point guard (as it looks like Anderson is gone over to the Hornets for that stiff Elden Campbell) and like we need another stiff of a 7 footer to anchor the bench.

What the hell is the Sonic brass thinking?? More on this to come.

Payton wasnt happy at all in Seattle anymore, and wanted out. Otherwise I would agree with you. Plus Allen is younger, and you also have Rashard Lewis. The Sonics are going to be a good young team. Better to be young than old and fading…

From that standpoint I agree with you (except for the fact that Payton wanted to leave Seattle. He might have done, but I don’t think he wanted to leave) the thing that gets me is giving up Mason. I don’t know, maybe it could be argued that if Payton were to leave anyway what we’ve done in essence is traded Mason for Allen, which is a good trade, but I don’t know.

The Sonics look really soft now.

Who knows, maybe they know something we don’t. Howie is friends with Kidd…Nah, that’d be too much to hope for. Bring on the Darko/James sweepstakes!

Well, from what I have heard, he was wanted out of Seattle since the preseason. Oh well :) I agree though, Mason shouldnt have been thrown in. If anything, they should have tried to get Sam Cassell (who is now in a backup role with Payton with the Bucks) into the deal. The funniest thing about this, is that the first game they play with their new teams… Sonics v. Bucks. LOL

I know! How ironic is that? Well, actually who knows if they will play?

After thinking about it, and listening to all the NBA expert analysis, it looks like a decent trade, especially in the long run. Funny thing is, on all the Milwaukee boards and such, they are just as upset as the Sonics fans. I guess havinf Allen leave is as big a deal to them as Payton going to another team is to Sonics fans

Oh well, no matter what the trade brings, I’m bummed out. Payton has been my favorite player for about 10 years now and I was really starting to like Mason as well, and don’t get me started on how my girlfriend things about us trading Mason…she’s really pissed. ;)

Well, I watched the game. Pretty nice way to send off D. Mase and GP - With a 30 point blow-out of their new team. Not to mention holding them to a franchise record low point total.

Maybe the ‘supes won’t be so bad after all. Bones Barry sure looked good, I’m pretty comfortable with him running the point if he can give even half of that on a night to night basis.

I’m still a bit bumbed, but heck I can still root for most of the guys we still have. This season was a wash even with GP and Mase. We’ve got potential and I’m a bit excited to see what Allen brings to the team.
