Matrix Reloaded Reviewed

I finally went and saw Matrix Reloaded last night, here is my review, there are some small spoilers.

All in all I thought it was a pretty good movie, but then again, I like everything. I wasn’t a huge fan of the first Matrix movie, although I did enjoy it, so I didn’t have really high expectations and I wasn’t effected by most of the hype. I imagine that if I was expecting more I’d have been pretty disappointed, I think only people who have a very special affinity to the first Matrix will love this movie.

For the most part I liked what they did with the plot, although there were some pretty big gaps and serious editing problems. I won’t go as far to say I was confused but there were a few times where I had to think pretty damn hard to keep things straight. Mostly towards the end. I understand that some of this was intentional, for tie-ins with the various other Matrix franchises, but I think they could have done a much better job with that.

Having said that I thought the plot shaped up nicely, especially where it concerns the Matrix itself and the machines. As with the first movie, I wish there was a bit more Agent Smith as he was the highlight of that movie for me, but I thought all the “rogue” programs were pretty interesting and I loved the scene with the Oracle’s security program.

The fight scenes were cool, as expected, with the exception of bits of the huge Neo vs. 100 Agent Smiths, which I found really, really corny. Usually I like corny, but in this case it just didn’t fit. Speaking of corny, there was one scene in Reloaded that really killed the movie for me. Like the phone booth scene in the first movie, the rave scene pretty much wrecked my overall view of the film. If they had taken it out I’d have liked it much more.

The thing is, I’m supposed to care about Zion right? Without that, what is the point? It’s the driving motivation for all the characters in the movie and the plot hinges on it. Well, to be honest, this part of the movie failed miserably. Zion seemed to me shallow and uninteresting, having no soul whatsoever. They should have spent more time showing us how folks in Zion lived and less showing a bunch of half naked club kids grinding to weak ass techno.

So, to sum up, my over all impression of the move was that it was pretty good, with the caveat that it could have been a whole lot better. I’d give it 3 out of 5 stars. Oh yeah, and X2 kicked it’s ass.
