Online Piracy Killing The Entertainment Industry?

May 08, 2003 | Comments 4 Comments

Just got done reading It’s All Free! over at Time.com. It’s an interesting piece about online piracy. Personally I’m not sure what the answer is here. But I don’t believe for one second it’s as bad a many industry people make it sound.

If you ask the pirates, they’ll say they’re just fighting for their right to party. If you ask the suits, they’ll say they’re fighting for their lives. “If we let this stand, you’re going to see the undoing of this society,” says Jack Valenti, head of the Motion Picture Association of America (M.P.A.A.).

Give me a break. I realize this is taken a bit out of context, but come on. Have a look at The Numbers - All Time Box Office Records. Quite a few of those are within the last three years. And, yes, I realize that there are other factors contributing to those numbers, but I’m not an idiot. I don’t think the movie industry is in any danger from piracy.

Mark my words, there will be at least three films added to that list before the end of the year. I’m not to sure the music industry is as bad off (as a whole) as they make it sound either.

I’m all for a good, legal, solution to this problem, but until you can get your copy of 50 cent for 10 bucks or less, there will continue to be piracy.

Personally I hope online piracy kills (reality) TV — keep downloading Mr. Personality will you!?

Keith, I couldnt agree with you more. This is exactly what the industry needed, was a swift kick in the ass to make them realize that we arent all fooled into thinking their CD prices are a steal.

Although, I will say that there are a lot of CDs out there now for about $10. They are new releases too, by top name artists… Maybe we are making a difference :)

I hope so. I mean I’ve spent so much money on music in the past, I’ve got hundreds of CDs and thousands of records (I used to DJ) and it just got to the point with me that I couldn’t justify spending $18 on the new Jurassic 5 CD for example – even though it’s a great disc. Too many times have I shelled out $13 or $16 on a new disc only to find it wasn’t near worth it. If I’d payed $7 or $9 – I’d be ok with that.

That’s why I have high hopes for the Apple Music Store. I’ve already set up an account and bought music from them. It’s easy, fairly priced, I can listen to bits of every song and if I wan’t one song of an album, I can just buy that one song.

Yeah, I also think the prices of DVDs are absolutely asinine… I mean, $20-25 to buy a movie? Give me a freakin break!

Well, to be honest, that doesn’t bother me AS much, but yeah, I hear you. I don’t really buy DVDs unless they are on sale, and lots of times I wait until you can buy them on the cheap at Blockbuster…
