The Artist: Saves The Day
The Song: Freakish
The Album: Stay What You Are
Released 2001
The energy of pop punkers New Found Glory. The pop sensibility and sense of humor of Weezer. The obsession with death of Morrisey. That pretty much describes Saves The Day. On this album anyway, they’ve gone more toward the Emo side of things, right past it in fact, the lyrics on Stay What You Are are almost gothic. Most of the tracks have some reference to blood, death or severe injury. The pop-punk hooks are still there and the song writing is very solid, and more interesting than depressing really, although many of the songs are pretty graphic, conjuring up some pretty wicked imagery. If most Emo makes you want to slit your writs, this makes you want to chop your hand of with a meat cleaver. This is least evident on their ballad, Freakish, which sports a painfully downtrodden yet amazingly catchy sing-along chorus. This one is very Weezer-esque. A very nicely done album from a band that has a promising future.
