The Artist: Ozomatli
The Song: Eva
The Album: Ozomatli
Released 1998
This week’s song goes out to my friend Heather Babbitt who is leaving to go to school in Austin by way of Costa Rica this coming Monday.
What can I say about Ozomatli. They’ve become one of my favorite bands of all time, both with their albums and amazing live shows. Their debut album was released back in 1998 and still gets very heavy play. They combine Latin, ska, hip-hop, rock, soul, reggae and much more to produce the perfect soundtrack for many occassions. The perfect party music.
As if that weren’t enough, this album features one of the best rappers around Chali 2na from J5 and he’s at his best here. Listen to “O Le Le”, his smooth voice fits in perfectly with their overall vibe. Then again, where wouldn’t 2na fit in? And who hasn’t he worked with? The guy’s amazing.
If you’ve not heard them before, I can’t recommend them enough. Ozomatli is a true classic with serious staying power. Their sound is so appealing to so many musical tastes it defines the term crossover. While it does carry a latin feel, there is much more to it than that. Give it a listen, I’m sure you’ll love it and if they ever come to your town, do whatever it takes to check them out, they put on one of the best shows around.
Recommended if you like: Quetzal, Jurassic 5, Orishas, Buena Visa Social Club, Mana
