SOW: Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades by Brand New
June 27, 2003 71 | Comments (Closed)
The Artist: Brand New
The Song: Sic Transit Gloria…Glory Fades
The Album: Deja Entendu
Released 2003
And now for something Brand New. This week’s song comes from a band who is not only long on song names, but long and deep on talent as well. This is really a band to keep your eyes on. Brand New and this latest album, Deja Entendu really defy classification. There is still a bit of that pop punk there, and they could still be called emo, but I think there is much more to Brand New than that. They seem at times a little Coldplay and others a little Green Day and much more in between.
The songs on Deja Entendu cover a pretty wide range of styles and each seems to have it’s one unique feel. At times they sound quirky, almost experimental, and at others extremly poppy. This isn’t limited to between tracks, it’s often evident within one song.
Take a listen to “Sic Transit Gloria…Glory Fades”, it’s one of the more accessible tracks on the album with a driving pop riff and some really great change ups and will give you an idea of what to expect from the rest of this great album. Or maybe not.
Recommended if you like: Saves The Day, Coldplay, Bright Eyes, Thursday, Taking Back Sunday, Jawbreaker

I agree, it’s a great album. Reminds me quite a bit of Jawbreaker. Great hooks and song writing with a touch of something that puts them apart from other bands in the same genre.
Oh and I like the site as well. ;)

Thanks for the comments. Yeah, I like to add some off topic stuff like this to keep it interesting for not only my readers by myself as well, seems to be going over pretty well so far so I’ll keep that up.
David - I agree with the Jawbreaker reference. I was trying to describe this album to my brother, who loves Jawbreaker, and I used that same comparison! Guess I should add them to the RIYL.

Definately one of my favorite all around albums..I don’t think it was an experiment, this is just the band maturing. It is a more mature sound. Also for recommended bands if you like Brand New, why the hell is coldplay there? yeah thats horrible.

“Sic transit gloria mundi” is a latin term meaning “so the glory of this world passes away”. Pretty much the same as “Glory Fades”. Exellent song.

Hey, I was reading the newsgroup, and all the people that are dissing on Coldplay need to go lay down. I definately feel a slight Coldplay vibe in Deja entendu. Brand New is amazingly talented, and so is Coldplay. They are both groups that aren’t going to be leaving anytime soon because they are doing something different and have a very unique sound. anyway…. DON’T diss on Coldplay friends. I’m sure Brand New enjoys Coldplay greatly

Soco armeretto lime…..is a mixed drink..
Soco is Sothern Comfort.
Armeretto is a liquar made from walnuts I believe…and is also used in the popular drink Armeretto sour.
the song Sic Transit Gloria is about the character Max in the movie Rushmore…Very good flick about a young kid that falls in love for the first time with an older woman. Another many band (cant remember their name) also has a song called… She’s my Rushmore. You would have to see the movie to understand it..but I think you would like to know a few facts about where Brand New got Sic Transit Gloria from. The first time he says it is when he is sitting on the bleachers talking to the teacher.

In the song, hes the virgin shes not. In the video when he walks in, they all do what he does because they had sex with the same girl. So basically, they are him. Thats why the video is like that i think. And at the end, the new guy she did “it” to, makes him copy him. Because hes no longer the newcomer. d:) Thats just what i think.
Can someone tell me what the songs The Quiet Things No One Ever Knows and Am i Wrong mean??
Does Am i Wrong mean hes dieing and he doesnt believe in God? Or is it a girl??? Hhhhhmmmm……its pretty cool either way. Thnx for reading people!

The song “the quiet things that no one ever knows” in my opinion is about two things. on a larger level, if you’ve seen the video, its about a boy and a girl, girlfriend boyfriend, fiance’s, whatever… they get into an car crash. okay, now for the specifics: u have to realize that he’s singing in hindsight, however the video plays chronologically from beginning of the accident until the end. tricky tricky tricky jesse. the lyircs in the first verse i believe depict a vacation or trip they took together, and how that built their relationship up. however this is where the accident occured, hence the lyric “we saw the western coast, i saw the hospital”…. the second verse is looking back on their marriage and more specifically their wedding day. rainy day weddings make for good emo but also relay how their life together could be possibly doomed, an omen if you will. And the lyric, “and though our blessed, the parents let them shoulder all the blame” i believe depicts jesse’s view on how although society sees children as being blessed, the parents do too little to help them cope with the trials and tribulations they may encounter in growing up due to the parents lack of being able to relate to their kids. the quiet things that no one ever knows are the things that any two people share between each other that make their relationship special to them.
so thats my interpretation, hope it helps you out. as for the other song, i havent heard it so i can’t presume anything. listen, anyone know what guernica means? i mean i pretty much know what the song is about, i’m just searching for the meaning of the word….. longs island boys never struck me as those who’d be into latin, funny?

(I have no idea about guernica.)

as said earlier.
soco = southern comfort
amaretto = cream based liquor
lim = lime
the song is about getting drunk and thinking of yourself as high up on the pedestal of life, as with the words of “above the overpass”, “you and me were ‘kings’”, as does happen when you’re drunk, but that are high on the overpass pedestal.. haha they have become delusional. Drinking makes you feel better than life and nothing can ruin it.

I love the sic transit video and the song and album alike. Both the song and the video have a meaning that you have to look into, and it keeps you pressing the repeat button (at least people that like songs with deeper meanings like myself). I was wondering about the yellowcard thing as well, but I dont think that its cause the song is about the same thing as sic transit. I dont hear the same thing in ocean ave. as I do in sic transit. Ocean ave. seems more to me just about leaving someone you’ve been with for so long. Both bands are great, and the violin thing sets yellowcard out just cause its a cool twist on a modern rock band, but I have to say I think that Brand New is the better band simply because of their lyrics (seventy times 7 is so great lyrically). I have to say though Marshall, I wouldnt compare YC with the likes of any of the bands you listed, cause none of them really have something that sets them apart from the others or makes them truly unique like YC does with the violin or brand new does with their lyrics. Not to say any of those bands are that bad….well, billy talent…..
