In my latest Gorilla Web Tip, Number Three - The One Magic Rule of Web Design, I talk about the difference between a “rule” and a “guideline” and how often by blindly following general rules with no usability evidence to back them up can potentially hurt a Web site.
Again like with most things “Web” it comes down to concrete and clear goals and understanding that, at this point in time, we have lots of guidelines and no real rules.

Excellent post especially for beginning web designers who like to take the rules as written in stone. They are more like written on sand on a beach and might eventually get washed away to be replaced by another “rule”. Like they say in Pirates of the Caribbean:
They aren’t rules. We like to think of them as guidelines. (Hope I got that right).
I guess the only unspoken rule that I keep for myself is try to maintain quality to my own standards.
