Seeing as how today marks the 1st anniversary of this little old blog, I thought some party music was in order for the SOW. As usual, iTunes picked a song from a random shuffle that got me on the right track. That song was “Steppin Thru” by the killer BC crew Swollen Members, a party song in it’s own right, but not what I was looking for. However, as I was listening to Moka Only rhyme, I had an epiphany. Len!

You know? Len? “Steal My Sunshine”? Most folks labeled them as a one-hit wonder because of that song. Most people didn’t listen to the album. You Can’t Stop the Bum Rush is one of the best party albums ever. Don’t laugh! I’m serious.

If you’ve heard “Steal My Sunshine” I imagine you would have a sort of bubble-gum pop image of the band. While there is a strong pop element to them, they are more hip-hop than pop and more party than anything else. They’ve got newcomers like the aforementioned Moka Only who is featured on this weeks song, and old schoolers like Kurtis Blow and Biz Marke.

I’d say that gives them a bit of street ‘cred. They also have great variety, a bit of talent and an ear for a good time. Most of their stuff is pop-party hip-hop but they’ve got some disco, 80’s and techno feel to some tracks as well.

Listen to “Cryptik Souls Crew” and if you’ve still got doubts, buy the disc, pop it in at your next party and watch your friends get down.
