Redcoats by The DivorceThe Artist: The Divorce
The Song: Redcoats
The Album: There Will Be Blood Tonight
Released 2003

This week I’ve got more new music for you, this time from my own back yard. For those of you who don’t know, the Seattle music scene is still as live as ever, although it’s much changed from the grunge days. I’m sure many have heard some of the great post-grunge bands to come out of Seattle. Modest Mouse, Murder City Devils, Built To Spill and Vendetta Red come to mind as bands that have extended their sounds outside of the evergreen state. Well this week I’m going to introduce you to a great Seattle band that you might not have heard. Yet.

The Divorce. Simply put, they rock.

They do have a bit of a Seattle sound to them, but they fall somewhere between the “smart” rock of say Built to Spill and the sheer emotional rampage of Murder City Devils. Much like Brand New they fail to fit into a clearly defined category and have kind of made a niche for themselves.

The first time I heard them was on KEXP (a great Seattle independent music station available over the ‘net) and I was instantly hooked. The song was “The Main Moan” and the opening few lines “I think that living here / is going to be bad for my lungs / and what to do / when it’s five to two and my bar tab has been rung” really stuck with me and I couldn’t help thinking of the first time I heard The White Stripes.

I’ve not seen then live, but I hear they are amazing. Their debut album, There Will Be Blood Tonight sure is. “Redcoats” is probably not what you would consider their first single, but it’s my favorite song from the album and has a quirky pop feel that I find truly unique.

Recommended if you like: White Stripes, Vendetta Red, Pavement, Visqueen, Hot Hot Heat, Alkaline Trio, Spoon

I’ve seen this band live a few times and I adore them. I’ve been recommending them to friends of mine all over the country. Two of them just bought the CD and are in love with it. It’s a great CD and I’m gonna miss seeing them live so much when I move.

If you haven’t had the lyrics sent to you yet, I’ll send them to you.

I just saw the Divorce live and they rock. I bought their cd and i must say that though their music sounds better live, it still is totally worthwhile on cd. More than worthwhile. It totally rocks.

been a divorce fan for a while now, and i guess i have to agree the fact that A) they rock, B) they are beautiful and C) the cd rocks. since a couple people have asked for lyrics i have only one thing to say: go buy the cd. as many bands before them, The Divorce have lyrics to their songs on the case insert thing. and everyone should go their website. http://www.thedivorce.net . go to the messageboard while you’re there, and listen to The General- he knows everything. and that ben lashes guy is pretty cool too. so…support the scene, buy their cd!

The Divorce is awesome! Their CD is absolutely amazing, and their is so much energy on stage when they perform! They also add lots of commentary and often times make the audience laugh :) They are incredible on-stage, have definitely mastered the art of guitar-throwing and are really nice if you get a chance to meet them :)

I am the General, and Reckless is right: I do know everything. The boys in the Divorce know only slightly less than me, but one of the things they do know is how to rock.

The Divorce rocks, we just saw Shane yesterday…the garbage concert got postponed, and we went into the random coffee shop…and he was there, so it was definitely the highlight of…*thinks* my life! so they’re in my holy trinity of bands, and they’re sooooo good live!

Jimmy was is full of himself? I just saw them in Portland at the Moew Moew and they were all really nice. my friends and I are really into them and they talked to us while they were out smoking and at the Merch table. They all seemed tight! Seattle looks a little better then Portland at the moment. Just a little though.
