Blogs Are Tools. Period.

From Webloggers deal Harvard blog-bores a black eye by Andrew Orlowski:

The medium is not the message. Imagine how tedious newspapers would be if every other story proclaimed “We use INK!!!” The writers don’t care, and the readers don’t care, how this message was delivered: but readers do care about quality.

I blog about blogs because I see work in an industry that uses them as a tools for many things. But they are simply that. A tool used to publish content. End of story. If I didn’t use MT (blogging software) I’d use something else.

Implying that blogs are anything more is pretty ridiculous.

Since when do technical bloggers suddenly have some hidden agenda? It’s a shame that an article attempting to move past the ‘phenomenon’ of blogging (which I applaud) goes on to villify ‘HTML coders’ and self-referential bloggers as the driving force behind the trendy perception of blogging. Hello-o?! Ironically it’s fluffy reporting that has created this giant bubble of bloggy mindshare, not the personal thoughts of thousands of random people who may or may not have anything interesting to say. I thought we were over this shit half way through 2000, but alas Wired magazine still exists. Technical blogs are wonderful resources, not subversive marketing tools for the ‘blog revolution’ or whatever the hell this guy is accusing us of.

regarding being over it, i was recently acknowledge as a blogger, when I’d previously just been publishing a vanity site. there’s an old skool side of me, that wants to ignore the tools and do it manually, but i guess I do blog. even with permalinks and a rss feed.
