I just lectured on accessbility, standards-based design, and css, and included this technique in my lecture. In the usage I described, for Clip-n-Seal, the technique works well and is fully accessible. It’s also noted as working here

and, my lecture

I was surprised to see that the technique needed to be defended. I must’ve missed an ongoing debate.

For Clip-n-Seal, we’re not using images for anything other than product shots and logos, which we describe as product shots and logos.

It needed it. I’ve heard a lot of noise about the technique and various problems. The Zen Garden heavily relies on it, so I became a logical dumping ground for concern.

Hopefully the new variations flying around right now will solve this once and for all, and make everyone happy. As I say: we need it.

No doubt. I’m going to play around with the new techniques when I get to that point in my redesign. I’ve used FIR quite a bit for headings and the like, but as you say, there are various “problems” with it. Most of the ones I’ve come across seem to have solutions, I just haven’t been able to sit down and explore them.

Honestly I’ve have never thought of using CSS image replacement for say, navigation. Just never crossed my mind.
