Perfect Web Design - A Myth

In my opinion, there is no such thing as a perfect Web design, and often projects can be severely undermined by striving to hard to achieve perfection. Good goals, a solid plan and realistic expectations are what breeds successful Web sites.
This week’s Gorilla Web Tip - The Myth of Perfect Web Design talks about how it’s ok to settle for “very good” when working on a Web design and that because of the nature of the Web, there is no such thing as a “perfect” Web design.

Well, you could turn this around anyway. Exactly the moment when you manage to find the perfect balance of methods, techniques, etc. for your project your Web design will be perfect ;)
In this case the best possible equals the perfect Web design. So what you are discussing here is rather a philosophical interpretation of the word perfect, right?

In a sense you could say that - but I don’t think that perfect balance your are talking about is realistic in the vast majority of situations. Exactly the point I’m trying to make.
You could argue that (and almost everything else - a common problem among Web professionals) based on semantics. But I don’t want to get into a semantical discussion of the word perfect - that is why I defined it for the purpose of the article.
The reason I wrote this is that there is way too often to much effort by clients, designers, etc. when working on a Web project to try and make it perfect.
Many times a project will get mired down because of personal opinion, lack of decision making and unrealistic expectations. This leads to poor solutions for a variety of reasons. You might have a great Web site at the end, that took way to long and cost way to much, for example.
These projects would be much better off with some “less than perfect” balance.
Thus the lead in quote – “Perfect is the enemy of the good.”
