The Artist: Kenna
The Song: I’m Gone
The Album: New Sacred Cow
Released 2003
Kenna is both easy and hard to define. When I first listened to New Sacred Cow I instantly liked it, but I wasn’t sure exactly why. To be honest it reminded me of Duran Duran. But, hell, I like Duran Duran.
Kenna is catchy, he’s got an 80’s feel to his sound, much like The Postal Service, but there is something edgy and raw there as well. Not too surprising I guess, he once opened for Tool. Or so I hear.
That something could be coming from the spectacular production of the Neptunes’ Chad Hugo. Some of the beats on the album are just plain crazy, and they play an excellent and very interesting backdrop to Kenna’s sugary pop vocals.
New Sacred Cow, upon the second listen, struck me as a truly memorable album and has been in heavy rotation since. It just keeps getting better with every listen. All the songs are great, it was hard to pick one for this weeks’ song, they’re all so good. Each one has a little bit of a different sound, but they all falling into a kind of hand-crafted, electro-pop grove. Truly amazing.
Kenna is a real talent, and I’m sure you’ll be hearing more from him in the future.
Recommended if you like: The Postal Service, N.E.R.D., Radiohead, Coldplay, Duran Duran, Badly Drawn Boy

I’m so glad that you reviewed (and liked) this album. I’ve been waiting for it to come out since I saw the Hell Bent video a year or so ago. That video really struck something inside of me and I am glad to hear that the album is good as well. I think I’ll go pick it up.

I’m sure there are lots of people out there who saw the “Hell Bent” video and wondered when Kenna’s disc would hit the streets. Great song.
I was going to make the point that it’s unlike any other song on the album, and that’s true, but really all of the songs are pretty unique.
Pick it up - I’m sure you’ll like it.

The “Hellbent” video was more than a year ago. I was able to download the album, and everytime i heard a rumor that someone was putting it out (Limp Bizkit’s Durst was going to put it on his label for a while), it just made me mad: it’s a solid album that the industry didn’t know what to do with for years, until the Neptunes began making a name for themselves (in the public, not just in production circles).
I think i’ll go buy it just for the principle of the thing.

When I saw “Hellbent” by Kenna with my brother at home watching MTV, we were fascinated. Sat in silence for a few seconds before uttering “Wow, that was deep”. It was both the mix of the song and the video along with it.
One of the more moving, through provoking pieces I’ve ever seen in storyform music videos.
Just thought I’d say that.
Also if you know where I can download the video that would be excellent.
It’s a shame that I can’t find Kenna on the shelves in Malaysia though. *sigh*
