Switch To Mozilla

This week I’m doing something a bit different for my Gorilla Web Tip. For Gorilla Web Tip Number Six - Switching to Mozilla, I offer some of the best reasons I can think of to give Firebird a try. This article is geared toward the average Web user as an audience. Feel free to forward on to friends or post on your sites.

A nicely worded article, not too techy. Do you mind if I add it to my “Worth a Look” section?

Excellent article, Keith. I’m redesigning my personal site and will be including text that only IE/Win users will see, encouraging them to try Firebird. If enough bloggers do this, we should be able to make a decent impact.

Excellent article. I only started to use Firebird about three months ago - for design testing purposes - and it was so good the situation’s been reversed: Firebird for browsing, IE for testing.

ok, ok, i’ll make the switch now! As a little case study, I’ll let you know what I think of it from my point of view.

I hope this download isn’t too long.

I’m back having downloaded the zip and installing Firebird. The installation was a breeze and i’m currently using it and going to my favorite sites (both flash based and XHTML+CSS based) and cannot find a single reason to go back to IE.

The best and most outstandingly positive feature I’ve been able to apply in my short time of use is the tabbing feature. So tired I was of having multiple windows open for each site, which would bog down my work flow and now the results free up so much space for me to complete my work in an uncluttered manner. This is a wonderful feature and all the reason I need to keep firebird.

Granted, I say this is the only feature i’ve found but I’m sure I’ve yet to find all the reasons why I should have made the switch. With bookmarks and all the other features, i’m sure this will just be icing. I’m now curious as to how it will effect some sites structures and layout.

I’m slowly although earnestly making the switch over to programs and platforms that are non-mircosoft based. By september, I’ll have a new desktop and will have escaped them. I’ve become sick of their experience and want nothing more from them.

You made some good points about how Mozilla is a live product and that IE has stagnated until the next release of Windows. Excellent article.

Mozilla displays sites well, but for those of us with Mac OS 9 it has been unreliable at copying text because it will not copy if certain text is included [nested

  • with other tags] it changes some characters like bullet points to other characters [#, *]based on html for no obvious reason, it has problems with basic items like scroll bars [should be shown on non primary windows, doesn’t handle double on each end scroll arrows if javascript is off, etc.].

I’m a longtime Mozilla user, and wouldn’t go back. Firebird is a good start, but not as mature as Moz… a few more releases and I’ll move to it.

I’ve been using Mozilla for eight months or so now. Before that I used Opera, unless someone tied me onto an ant hill to force me to use IE. I like the tabbed browsing and intelligent popup control. I rarely encounter a site that I can’t understand with Mozilla, unless the developers specifically block all browsers but IE.

One nice feature that I don’t use as much as I ought is the F11 (on Win98) to get nearly full screen browsing. It can drastically increase the amount of space for viewing a document. Another useful tool is the zapit bookmarklet from

    http://www.squarefree.com/bookmarklets/zap.html

It is great for when you encounter one of those websites with color combinations that don’t look nearly as good on your monitor as they must have on the designer’s monitor.
