Guerilla vs. Gorilla

September 03, 2003 | Comments 6 Comments

For those of you who don’t “get it” when I use the term “Gorilla” in my Gorilla Web Tips I’m trying (obviously not very successfully based on all the people e-mailing to correct me on this) to be funny. I’m playing with words. See?

A snip for my first “Gorilla” article, Gorilla Usabilty:

Don’t worry. I know how to spell. I imagine you’ve heard the term “guerilla marketing”? Well, it’s kind of like that, but a lot less subtle. It’s about getting out from behind the video camera, the reports, the stats and all the guru commandments and actually getting to know your users. It’s about making that direct connection between the makers and the users. It’s about getting into their world, seeing how they use your sites on their turf. It’s about learning how to listen to what your users want, and getting past your own assumptions.

I’m going to leave it at that. Hopefully folks can figure out what I’m trying to do. I would have assumed (and you know what that means) that people would give me a bit more credit but I guess that’s too much to ask.

Guess I should have taken my own advice. I’ll do my best to remember that next time. This is what I get for trying to “market” something. Ahh, well.

As someone with an intentional misspelling in his domain name, I feel your pain. ;)

I get comments all the time about Pixellated being misspelled. When I went looking, “pixellated.org” was the only domain available, and I took it. I know it’s spelled “pixelated” (or, for purists, “pixilated”), but it didn’t make sense to me to buy “pixellated.org” and not spell it as “Pixellated.”

Who knows…. I may drop it altogether, as I like “Built for the Future” better… :-)

Cheers!

Ethan: don’t talk to me about misspellings. I decided to call my site after the IRC name I was known under. I used an odd spelling as there were already several others using the normal spelling, but I do feel a bit stupid having to spell it to people when I give them the sites address.

Bob: I always thought it *was* “pixel”, not “pixil” as it’s a contraction of “picture cell”. I guess I can afford to be wrong for a second time in my life ;-)

Pete: “pixel” is short for “pixel element,” but, at least in my case, “pixelated” was a play on the word “pixilated,” which means whimsical, prankish, or even intoxicated. Goofy. That’s me. I thought that “pixelated” would describe my work: digital art, created with pixels, with a loony twist. Or something like that.

Bob: I’d assumed it was two different spellings of the same word, not two completely different words. Thanks for the reply.
