Progressive Enhancement - Part Two

Over the last few weeks, and quite a bit this weekend I spent some time making updates to Asterisk* — my second round of progressive enhancement to the site. For a recap of my first progressive enhancement, read Progressive Enhancement - Part One.

A few of the things I’ve been doing:

Reviews and recommendations. I’ve spent quite a bit of time on this part of the site, mostly on populating the section with content, and I’m still working. It’s been a bit of a challenge and I’ve learned quite a bit about how MT Templates work, as well as the various ways you can use categories. At this point I don’t have time for a full explanation of how it was done, it’s not all that impressive anyway, but I invite you to check out my review and recommendations pages and read my original post on this subject.

I’ve already gotten some great feedback on this stuff, thank to all of those people who have written to tell me they enjoy that.

Individual Entries. Here I’ve added some basic navigation and links to recent posts for those folks who come into the site via a search engine or direct link to a post. I realized that if someone was new to the site, they might not have an idea of what Asterisk* was all about or who I was. I wanted to provide them with some links that could help them get around and get the latest.

Search. I finally figured out how to put the look and feel of the site into the search template. It was actually quite easy, I had just never taken the time to figure it out.

Movable Type. I made some minor adjustments to my templates and to the way I rebuild the site that will hopefully result in a bit better performance when commenting and the like. I’m not sure if this is working yet, but I’m hopeful.

That’s pretty much it. As I’m sure most of you know, a Web site is a work in progress. If any of you have anything you feel I should address, feel free to drop me a line.

Next up: Some template re-work, as short entries don’t display properly, argh, some more work on the reviews and hopefully a new and improved Song of The Week player.
