SOW: Rock & Roll by The Neptunes Featuring Fam-layThe Artist: The Neptunes Featuring Fam-lay
The Song: Rock & Roll
The Album: The Neptunes Present: Clones
Released 2003

Star Trak! The Neptunes are prolific, having worked with acts ranging from Justin Timberlake to Kenna. They’re not to shabby as artists either, as evidenced by Pharrell’s many guest appearances.

On Clones it looks like he, with co-producer Chad Hugo, are calling in a few favors. The result: a none too original but highly entertaining compilation of tracks produced by the Neptunes.

There is a little something for everyone on here, so much so that it leaves the album as a whole a little disjointed. Not too unexpected, it plays much more like a mixed tape of eclectic singles. You’ve got the r-n-b slash dance-floor groove of “Frontin’”, the goofy emo-pop of “Fuck n’ Spend” and the crazy deep beat rap of this week’s song “Rock & Roll”, all mixed up with lots more. Behind it all are the Neptunes pop sensibilities, killer beat work and super-smooth production.

Clones is a word is fun. It’s not going to win any awards, but I imagine will find it’s way into quite a few collections, even if it’s just a guilty pleasure.

i had pretty much the same reaction that you did. it was fun, but didn’t feel like a cohesive unit. that said, i do not regret the purchase. i am consistently blown away at how strong the signature sound of the neptunes comes across on each and every track that they do.

the free dvd that comes with it is pretty cool too. it gives a good look inside of the production studios and minds of the neptunes.
