Asterisk* - No Play Version
October 30, 2003 5 | Comments (Closed)
Every once in a while I’m asked why I don’t just stick to Web design and similar topics. Well, the short answer is variety is the spice of life and my interests extend way beyond what I do for a living.
However, I do recognize that while I consider this a personal site there are many others who come here just for the posts on Web design and development and could care less about the Song of The Week and what comics I think are cool.
For those crazy folks I’ve made a “No Play” RSS feed. I’m not going to go as far to make an alternate style sheet or homepage, although I briefly thought about it. I figure most of you who’d be interested in this will have a news reader.
So, enjoy — or not — just remember, all work and no play make Jack…blah, blah, blah.

Bah, that’s really a pity to hear that you’ve got readers criticizing what you do with your site. Still, a very accommodating solution — love the new feed.

It’s a very tricky situation. We allow comments and have contact address’ which solicit feedback from visitors. We allow visitors to make a connection with us that makes them feel they are a part of the comings and goings of a site, so is it so much of a suprise that after a while they feel they can have a say in the content of a site?
On the other hand it’s probably fair to say that most sites are of the ‘personel’ kind where the hosting is paid for out of our own pocket with no redress, the site is built/updated in our spare time and the content consists of anything we feel like writing at that particular time. Again nobody should be suprised when we get a little defensive when a visitor suggests we “stick to what I find interesting”
I think you’ve hit a good compromise here. RSS feeds by catagory seems a good idea and may well go a long way to keeping ‘most’ visitors happy. Well, those who use RSS readers anyway!

I think one of the most refreshing aspects of this site and sites like kotke.org is the mix of personal interest with design related issues. Apart from proof that you have some kind of life, I think it’s one’s other interests and influences that have both a direct and indirect bearing on one’s design work. Sometimes some of the most original ideas and sources of inspiration come from other pursuits. Anway I think you have been more than accomodating.

I’ve always found it amazing that people feel they can control content so much on a blog. Unless one decides otherwise, I’ve always felt that a blog was for oneself first and any other audience second. I like your Song of the Week and other non-technical entries.

I make no apologies about the fact that my blog is about more than just Flash programming. Blogs are a personal interest thing first and foremost. It’s too bad people are complaining. You have a good solution, but I wouldn’t accomodate those people myself. Take it all or leave it all.
