Collage Foundation

October 28, 2003 | Comments 1 Comments

I just got a look at The Collage Foundation and overall I think it’s a good site. The design is fresh and interesting and the content is great. It’s fairly usable as far as all Flash sites go, although I have to say I had a much easier time with the low bandwidth version, even though I’m on a high speed connections.

My guess is it’s very audience appropriate, as it seems to be targeting younger people and those who would have a high motivation to get in there and explore. That is one of the reasons I can see this working pretty well. The site is set up in such a way that it’s not too hard to get around, but it does take a bit of exploring to get the most out of it.

It’s not really at all a traditional Web design, but I think it works here. Up to a point.

After a few minutes playing around I wanted to get down and read some more about the Foundation and what they’re all about. Thing is the text is small and with all the other movement going on a bit hard to concentrate on. It’d be nice if this content was provided in some other manner for those folks who just want to get the info. In the current form I can’t bookmark it, enlarge the font or print it out.

This seems like a perfect candidate for an (X)HTML alternate site, or even a simple content library or accessible, printable, kit — for lack of a better description. I’m sure there are many people out there who’d love to bookmark a particular story or print something from their site. Because I’d bet it has an XML back end this seems like an easy thing to do, hopefully they’ll provide that at some point.

As side from the rather large accessibility issues, it’s a nice example of an all Flash site, if for nothing else than it seems to target it’s audience very well.

The enthusiasm and vitality of the people behind the site really come through, don’t they? I like it!

“In the current form I can’t bookmark it, enlarge the font or print it out.” I hear you. Being able to zoom the movie via right-click is no substitute for scaling the text up via “ctrl +”, and in my case right-clicking the movie doesn’t provide a zoom option, what’s with that?

One gripe: I’m trying to read the ‘angela talking’ section, and painfully slow and repetitive animations obstruct the text, ack.
