SOW: All Night by Swollen MembersThe Artist: Swollen Members
The Song: All Night
The Album: Heavy
Released 2003

Mad Child (Heineken firmly in hand), Prevail, Moka Only and Rob The Viking are back again with another solid album that showcases their unique brand of party hip-hop. While not a strong as last year’s Monsters in The Closet and less star studded, Heavy is still a great album in it’s own right.

I’ve been a big fan of Swollen Members for years now and I’m impressed with their ability to keep cranking out unique hip-hop. If you’ve not heard them, and I bet many of you haven’t, you should check them out.

If you have heard them but not in awhile, they’ve changed quite a bit in the last two years, especially since the addition of Moka Only. From the more dark and deep sounds of Balance and my favorite Bad Dreams they’ve come with a more upbeat but not less hard hitting style that’s perfect for the dancefoor.

If you’re still skeptical, don’t worry, it’s true they’ve added a bit more “mainstream” vibe to their sound but still kick that Dungeons and Dragons shit every once in a while on Heavy.

I’m not sure why they don’t get much play here in the US, but they are huge up in Canada, being out of B.C. Maybe as they become more accessible they’ll break it big down here.

In any case, they’re a band you should check out if you’re into unique and partyin’ hip-hop. If they come to your town, check them live, they’re a great party.

Recommended if you like: Dilated Peoples, Jurassic 5, Moka Only, Len, Tribe Called Quest, Black Eyed Peas

Yeah, you like it? I’d also recommend Monsters In The Closet – it’s very similar and has some great tracks. “Steppin’ Through” and “Breathe” w/ Nelly Furtado were both big hits up in Canada and are great cuts.

Their older albums a quite a bit different in style but really, really good. They’ve definitely gone for a more mainstream, dance vibe in the last two releases. I wasn’t sure if I’d like it, but it’s still S+M, still good, just a bit different.

I’m all about variety if you haven’t noticed.

This new swollen album is the most horrid example of the corruption of underground hip hop through the sucess that theese guys have had. What the fuck happened this HEAVY is softer than some ja rule shit. I drove 2 hours to get this and got my fuckin buzz smashed when the first song sounded like fifty cent beats and they came as hard as a paralyzed porn star. fuck that!!! Ive been a major fanatic scince balance and just got his heart broken by this new lolipop clubbin wack ass album. I have never been so dissipointed in my entire life. Balance- tight Bad Dreams- my fav Cd Monsters in The Closet- dope but heavy is a fucking bad dream within itself. FANS EVERYWHERE DONT COP THIS SHIT IT IS THE GAYEST ALBUM IN MY COLLECTION IM TRULY SORRY. THIS IS A SAD DAY IN HIP HOP UHH DAMN WE LOST ANOTHER ONE

Unfortunately, Swollen Members have been on steady decline since their first two releases, Balance and Bad Dreams. With their foray into pop and the dollar signs clouding their judgement, SM are destined to feed off of their initial momentum only to be sucked into the mass market machine and spit out as another generic crap-shoot. What will sell their albums will be their image, not much else.

You want some truly unique and original stuph, check out Buck 65 or anything on the Anticon label. And for those into the ol Dungeons & Dragons aggression and darkness, Transplants are a rowdy mess of a good time — though not exactly orthodox.

yea Balance, bad dreams, no doubt amazing unique albums. But as more and more moka comes in i seem to like it less and less. monsters was good. but not the same hard hitting aggresive style. i was really disappointed in heavy. it wasn’t heavy at all. its got a couple good tracks on it. but so many hooks and sooooooo many dance beats. They sorta lost their balance when moka came in.
Just my opinion. stick to the old and maybe a bit of the new…or if your a real mad child fan find the old school shit when he was in a group called “what the hell”.

S&M rocks the spot, thats the anthem…

yo swollen members is the shit from balance to heavy thay have put tracks out that are mind blowing and just plain kick ass heavy is there worse so far and this scares me because it’s also there newest so here’s the deal tell moka only to stick with his solo carier and leave swollen members than take it back to the cutting edge materal of balance and bad dreams because yes there getting more main streem but if you loose your core fans it’s not worth it now i do enjoy heavy from time to time but like that other guy said thay lost there balance.

It’s true the Members are going more and more mainstream. First with their single “Steppin’ Thru” and now it’s very obvious in Heavy. But I’m a huge fan and I’m going to keep supporting them and just hope that they go back to their old underground sound. A lot of fans are complaining about their new sound, saying they’ve gone too commercial and I bet Swollen Members are hearing you. And for those of you putting the blame on Moka Only, keep in mind that he was one of the original members and has contributed a lot to the band. If you didn’t know that, maybe you should check out their biography and find out what the members are about before you go dissin Moka.

Buy Heavy. It really is a good album even if not what’s expected.

There are some serious tracks on this album! S&M are consistently innovative, and are thus able to provide a phenomenal representation of the underground who evade whats main all across Canada. Much Love From The East Coast

THE BEST PART OF THE NEWEST CD WAS THE DVD THAT CAME WITH IT.

EVEN THOUGH. SWOLLEN MEMBERS ARE STILL A TIGHT ASS GROUP. THEY NEED LESS OF THAT MOKA ONLY DUDE.
JUST LIKE D-12 NEEDS LESS OF SLIM ANUS.

Swollen Members is a tight group! They have some raw lyrics! The first time I’ve heard this group was when I was playing my Xbox in 2001, playing NBA Live 2002! The beat that it played was Deep End (instrumental) and I thought that beat was the livest beat I’ve heard in years! Even now I’m still jammin on that beat! But I wish you guys would make a remix to that song! And you need to drop off of the devilish lyrics. And what I mean is that on the song Bottle Rocket you made you said “God, don’t test that, to infinite to get at” and you said “I’m satan dynasty killer”. People over here on the east side don’t rock to devilish lyrics. Right me a comment back Swollen Members. And keep up the good work.

Here’s the deal. Every body who’s putting SM down for throwing a “pop” album need to grab a Coke and a smile. So what if they tuned in to a different sound? The album still rocks…no question. Also, I just saw them in NYC at BB Kings and they rocked the joint…only problem was that there were too many fans there to see the main act, Ghostface Killa, to appreciate the fact that the best, most lyriclally talented, duo was on the stage in front of them. Rob, Mad Child, and Prevail are the best rap unit in existence. Period.
