The Artist: The Darkness
The Song: Get Your Hands Off My Woman
The Album: Permission To Land
Released 2003
Hellooooo ROCKTOBER! October is my favorite month of the year. Football is in full swing (Go Seahawks! Go Huskies!), the weather is usually pretty nice in Seattle, the leaves are turning and that’s just beautiful, basketball is beginning to get going and my favorite holiday of the year, All Hallows Eve, is coming up, and on a Friday this year!
Why is Halloween my favorite holiday? Well, because it’s a party y’all and I’m your D to the Jiz-ay! Not too mention egging, tp’ing, stealing kids…oh wait, I’m in my 30’s now…I like to dress up. Heh.
Speaking of a good party, let me get to this week’s song. The Darkness, for those of you who haven’t heard are, yet another, 80’s throwback. But with them it’s a bit of a change-up from the usual. They’re going back to a genre that many would just as soon forget, the 80’s metal hair band. And they’re fucking brilliant.
The Darkness sound is like Judas Priest, Queen and Ratt all rolled together and their image is Boston on the cover and Dio on the stage. They’ve got it down, man, and they’ve got it down well. The falsetto vocals, the weeping guitar, the heavy metal ballad — it’s all there.
Admittedly there is a bit of Spinal Tap in there, some of the stuff is laugh-out-loud funny, but much like another humorous band, Tenacious D, they’re actually pretty good. The songs grow on you.
Being a fan of many 80’s metal bands, I actually find myself appreciating The Darkness, as much as as I hate to admit it, and I really, really hope I get a chance to see them live sometime, they’re my new favorite band man! Anyway — I’m sure that is quite the event.
Hey, that’s an idea! The Darkness plays Seattle — Halloween night 2004! I’ll be there! It’ll be like Detroit Rock City man! Until then “Get Your Hands Off My Woman” muthafucka!!
Recommended if you like: Judas Priest, Queen, Spinal Tap, Motley Crue, Boston, Sweetwater, Guns n Roses

Dude, your taste in music never ceases to surprise. It’s all over the map, and that’s good. I’ve been really digging the S.O.W feature.

I just missed out seeing The Darkness live at this years Reading Festival. I did get to see Metallica though, so that made up for it.
The whole Permission album just rocks. I’m rather partial to Stuck In A Rut at the moment. It’s the bridge section that does it for me: “Oh, gimme the keys! You ain’t gonna see me for dust; the Barnby Bends ain’t gonna get the better of me! Oh, gimme the keys! To any old bucket of rust; The Acle Straights gonna take me to where I wanna be!”
Oh. Oh yeah.

I saw them live at Glastonbury this year having never even heard of them before - and they rocked. Completely over the top, ridiculous outfits and great stage presence.

Saw them at galsto and leeds - the opening lines at Glasto being the immortal “Who gives you rock before breakfast?” (their set started at about 11:40am on friday - I just emerged from my tent in time to watch them). The Leeds show was perhaps a better performance (albeit not quite as memorable as the hype was in full flow by then, compared to Glastonbury when they were relatively unknown). Still, bloody good live band all round. They’re in the states right now I think…

Well, I hope they’re in the states, and coming to Seattle – I’d love to see them.
Jonathan, you’re right my music taste is kind of all over the map. I don’t know why that is really, but there is very little I won’t give a chance too.
Glad you are enjoying the SOW - I sure like doing it every week. It’s my way of kicking off the weekend after a hard week of Web work and Web related posts. Don’t expect it to stop anytime soon.

Is that Tiny Tim’s son on vocals? It rocks, but his voice is PAINFUL.

The DARKNESS rule!!!!!!!!! They are superb! Finally a genuine ROCK group who are better than their hype. Just came across this site doing a DARKNESS search and wanted you to know that they are playing Seattle November 22, 2003 at StudioSeven. You probably know this by now but thought I would pass the info on just in case. Details at catwalkclub.net or at their website: thedarknessrock.com. I’m seeing them in Edinburgh Dec. 9th - can’t wait!!!!!!!
Cheers
