The Artist: The Kings of Leon
The Song: Joe’s Head
The Album: Youth & Young Manhood
Released 2003
When I listen to the Kings of Leon I get the distinct image of an old wooden fence. It’s out in the center of an empty field. Far off the interstate, maybe down some old dirt road out in the middle of Nowhere, Nebraska or Someplace, Montana. It’s clear and sunny, but cold as hell, like an early evening in November.
There is a guy sitting on the fence, he’s young, but grizzled and clothes don’t fit right. Some are loose and some are tight. Oh yeah, and he’s drinking a beer. Not one of those fancy microbeers everyone here in Seattle drinks, nah, it’s more like a can of Milwaukee’s Best or Pabst Blue Ribbon.
He’s not cold, or bored, he’s just hanging out in the middle of Nowhere drinking a brewski and watching the sun go down over the horizon and that’s cool.
Now I’m fairly sure, when you listen to this week’s song, “Joe’s Head” by The Kings of Leon, you may have a more “southern-fried” vision popping into your head, but I’ll also bet you’ll think it’s just as cool as I think mine is.
I’m also pretty sure you think, as I do, that the word “southern-fried” is a stupid one. But I bet you know what I mean when I say it, and besides, it’s how just about everyone describes The Kings of Leon.
