Steve Bartman Song Anyone?

October 15, 2003 98 | Comments (Closed)

Update - Well the Cubs lost, I have to say I’m a bit disappointed, I mean I can understand what any Cubs fan under the age of 30 is going through - My Mariners have never, ever made it to the World Series. The Yankees or A’s seem to get us every year. Anyway, I guess a funny song isn’t all that appropriate anymore huh? I really thought with Kerry Wood on the mound they’d pull it out.

Ok, well my hopes are on the Boston Sox now - because there is no way the Marlins are going take out those damn Yankees, although you know if Boston can’t do it I’ll be pullin for them. Ok, back to your regularly, if somewhat inappropriate, programming …

So let’s have a little fun with this guy, everyone else is. I do feel sorry for him and I hope that the Cubs can pull it out, but in the meantime, how about a little song. I’ll start and others can add to and finish it.

To the tune of “Paul Revere” by The Beastie Boys:

Now, here’s a little story, I got to tell,
about one silly fan, you know so well,
but it started way back, in history,
with Sianis, a bad stench and the curse of the Billy!

It is a typical Cubs fan that blames that game on the fan. The ball was over the rail. I doubt Alou would have even made the catch.

I can’t believe more people are blaming it on the fan than Alex Gonzalez, Kyle Farnsworth, or the rest of those losers.

And no, I’m definitely not from St. Louis :)

But that doesn’t change the fact that it could make a funny song! ;)

You gotta admit, that fan is a pretty good scapegoat for a season down the pooper. Wonder when they’ll find his body.

I’ve gotta give it to the Cubbies, even though my Cards played like a little girls softball team all season. It was a tough stretch at the end of the regular season between us, the Astros and the Cubbies. I just wish I never had to see Sosa’s face again. Does he know he plays on a team?

This could have been the year. If it just wasn’t for that crazy fan. :)

Yep the fan thing was kind of funny and had nothing really to do with the loss. It’s just sad you know, but I guess at the start of the year I didn’t expect much so I should be happy.

I don’t believe in the curse and I think the Cubs will have a good chance next year. Go Cubs in 1994.

Cubs vs. Mariners, eh?? :)

I think the Cubs stink. They would not have won that game no matter what. They had plenty of chances and blew every one of them. I feel that the cub fans and players are too weak to admit when they have been beaten. Yaa blame one of your own fans for blowing the game. Take a look at yourselves. You really stink.

I really feel sorry for Steve Bartman, if we were to place another Cub fan in that same spot, I bet well over 90% would get the ball and do the same as Steve done. How can any real Cub fan blame another Cub fan for a loss that wasn’t the fault of one foulball catch, how about yelling at the Umpires for not calling for a replay because of fan interferance? And to make things even worse for the guy, people go and bother his family and friends, yea that will bring justice for the loss of the Cubs. Every Cub fan has to take a long look at themselves and wonder, if I was in the same situation and seen a World Series bound flyball coming right into my hands, would I of seen anyone coming towards me to try and make a catch in the stands as high as I sat. I really hope that this will blow over very soon and as for the gov. of Ill., I’m sure glad I live in Wisconsin, I wouldn’t want someone in that high of office to even joke about something like he did. To all of you out there that just can’t seem to let go of the hate towards Steve Bartman, I feel sorry for you, your lives must be so boring that you have to invent things to keep your mind busy. As for what he did, does anyone out there really think that a guy wearing a Cubs hat and always going to their games to cheer them on would try and wreck their chance to go to the World Series? You all think about just leaving him alone…

I wish the Cubs would of gone all the way but to blame a true fan of messing up their chance of the World Series, how about blaming the umps, they should of called the play a do over and this would of been no big deal. And as for the media, they sure felt the fans name was important to get out so everyone could continue to bother him and his family for who knows how long. I know it may sound like a very old line but there’s always next year for them, and if you see it this way, they were really good this season so who’s to say that after a few months of time off they don’t return better than this year, good enough to go all the way to the win of the World Series…

I’m amazed at all the freaking cards and Sox fans here. Can’t you guys get it through your thick heads that even though the Cubs didn’t make it to the Series just getting to the playoffs a year after a season with 95 losses was amazing and its certainly more than what your respective teams did. I seem to remember a 5 game series in which the cubs dominated the cards taking 4 out of 5 and if it were not for a bad call down the line they would have taken all 5. So until all you Cubs bashers can come up with a real argument. Why don’t you get off the cubs backs.

Any team that can’t get past ONE missed opportunity for ONE out does not deserve to be in the World Series. They don’t have the heart, and that’s what the post-season is all about. Teams get into the playoffs because they have talent and a good coach, but they won’t win in the playoffs unless they have the capacity to step up and play on a higher level, even when something goes against them and even when one of their own fans is part of it. That is what separates champions from losers.

As a lifelong Die hard Cub fan I realize that it was not the fans fault the Cubs lost the series. Instead you have to ask, why didn’t Dusty Baker have the bullpen ready just in case things went south. Even with Mark Prior on the mound a 3 run lead in the 8th may not be safe. After the fan reaching for the ball Prior threw a ball 4 wild pitch. Maybe if Dusty had went to the mound after the crazy play with the fan Prior would have kept his composure. Who knows. All we can say is wait until next year…………again.

All of the players on the field reacted toward Alou’s outburst to the fan attempting to catch the foul ball and that is what swung the momentum of the game. Bartman isn’t the reason the Cubs lost. The ball was in foul territory, what if it went 3 feet further in the seats and Alou had no chance of making the play? No reaction and Prior would have beared down on the hitter, the Cubs would have gotten the 2 outs to end he inning. It would have been a different story if it was a homerun ball, where real impact on the game would have taken place.

There are way too many what-ifs in game 6. What if Bartman had not caught it? WHo is to say that the Marlins would not have scored 8 more runs. There is no reason to blame this on poor Steve Bartman.

The Cubs were an awesome team this year. THe Marlins were better. As much as I don’t think the Marlins should be in the WOrld Series, they certainly deserve it. They played a great defensive and offensive game 7 that i believe is worthy of those damn Yankees.

I am a lifelong baseball fan that lives in a town with no major league team but likes to see underdog teams win. The Cubs being underdogs because of not being in a World Series since 1945. I was rooting for both Chicago and Boston because of the historic implications that series would have had. After watching both teams lose in the 7th game of their respective series I’d have to say the players and their coaches and managers are responsible for the loss of their games. Both managers sat on their pitchers too long. The players just didn’t rise to the occasion. Now we have a Marlins/Yankees series because of it. Anybody sitting in Steve Bartman’s seat at the time of the foul ball would’ve reacted the same way regardless of what they say afterwards. Only the people who were far enough away to see the ball, Bartman and Alou could even think Alou had a play on the ball and should’ve realized Bartman wasn’t aware of Alou’s presence in the area. Steve was only acting as any other fan would in that situation. To catch a souvenier ball.

Is this the only game that anyone watched?
Throughout the entire playoffs I have seen fans reaching for balls, throwing paper on the fields, throwing beer on players, fighting with each other, players fighting with each other.
Seems nobody has any ballpark etiquette.
If it was truly fan interference then the umpire is to blame for not calling it that.
To blame this one person is unrealistic. The cubs and redsox’s took the playoffs a lot farther than most could have predicted, I never thought it would go to a game seven, but they did it. one heck of a turn around.

since 69 when i saw my first cubs game, I’ve expected them to loose every time I see them. In this way, I never leave Wrigley disappointed. I agree 100% with Ben Bartman. The Cubs are the worst thing at Wrigley. They’ve sucked for 100 years. The fans go to Wrigley because its one of the most fun and social things to do on the North Side; not because they expect great things from the Cubs. My Dad saw his first game there in ‘45, and he instilled Die-Hard Cub fandom in me. After the Cubs miserable and typical demise in the 03 NLCS, this die-hard fan is done. I hope they loose every game they play next year. I hope their entire ‘best-in-the-league’ pitching staff either retires or gets traded, and I hope Sammy gets deported. And last but not least, I hope Steve Bartman gets elected to the Hall of Fame for his tuffness and resolve in dealing with half-wit fans that can’t place the blame on the real loosers; the Cubs. They are destined to be the biggest loosers in sports, and they pull it off year after year without the ‘help’ of any fan.

I hate to bring it up at a time like this to all you Cub fans, but it is not the billy goat, nor is it Steve Bartman who is responsible for yet another heartbreaking collapse of the Cubs annual quest for baseball superiority. It is the spirit of the team itself. Nowhere was it displayed more clearly than in the eighth inning of game 6 by none other than your own Moises Alou. When after finishing second (to Steve Bartman)in his attempt to get his hands on the now infamous foul ball he didn’t make a conscious decision to immediately return to focus on the batter and his defensive position. Instead he elected to display a selfish, childish tantrum, more of a hissy fit really, ensuring that the focus of the game now shift away from the task at hand and any blame and histeria land squarely on the shoulders of Steve Bartman.

That spirit so beautifully illustrated by Alou is at the core of the problem with your beloved Cubs. Corked superstar bats, undisciplined emotions, tantrums in left field, just what is it that gives Cub fans reason to suspect that there team will become world champions?

Moises should clearly step up to Mr. Bartman and not only apologize, but share some his gajillion dollar income with him. He deserves it.

Hey Wagg, if you knew the player Alou was at all, you would not say such silly things. If you can remember, it was Alou who chastized his own teammate for gloating after a homerun. He said you should run the bases without all the hupla. Which is exactly what he did the next game against Florida (when he hit his homerun). Alou is one of the most quite, respectful, and calm players in the game. Calling him a crybaby for reacting to an important play in a huge game is just plain ignorant. If you think the Cubs deserved to lose, fine. Even if you hate them, or think Bartman had nothing to do with the outcome of the game, fine. Just don’t foolishly run your mouth and say something that is inncorrect just because you don’t agree with what’s being said.

Did anyone see the Yankees/Red Sox game last night. Matsui hits a ball in the right field corner and every fan over there is reaching for it while it is in play. Someone touched it and it was ruled a ground rule double and Williams had to stop at third. The announcers said nothing about what a bonehead move that was. That was way worse than what Bartman did. If the Sox would have got out of the inning, that would have cost them a minimum of one run. Those fans were blatantly reaching out for the ball, while Bartman followed a sky popup over his head while it drifted back toward the playing field. The difference is that the Yankees overcame it, the Cubs didn’t. That guy in NY would probably be in a body bag now if NY lost. I couldn’t believe the announcers never said a word, or that those idiots didn’t learn anything from Bartman.

The Marlins are going to beat the Yankees in the series. They are speedy and scrappy, and they can get to the Yanks aging pitchers (Mariano is the only exception) and can take advantage of the Yank’s meager defense (especially the NY outfield). The Marlins defense will also not make mistakes- their D will help limit any damage the Yankees do against Marlins pitching. The Marlins also have a very potent offense. They have guys who hit for power, guys who hit in the clutch, and guys who hit and use their basepath speed to make trouble. Like I said, that can wear down Yankee pitching (like the Angels did to them last year). The Yankees have no speed, whatever they do have, they cannot use with Ivan Rodriguez catching for the Marlins.

The Marlins are certainly capable of winning this series.

Funny song or not, you’ve GOT to acknowledge that Mr. Bartman was clearly not thinking very clearly. Sitting in the front row, at a level where one can reasonably expect an outfielder to reach, what was he thinking?

More blame, however, goes to Wrigley Field, for not creating a buffer zone to prevent possible fan interference.

The most blame, however, goes to the Cubs themselves for letting an event like fan interference or a single error throw them of of their game. They’re supposed to be professionals!

I told her ’ Don’t get your hopes up too high. The Devil isn’t on his way to Walmart yet to buy long underwear!” They didn’t let me down! They chocked three games in a row. It wasn’t Bartman’s fault. It was the shortstop’s, Dusty’s, for leaving the pitchers in too long, and the odds were just against the Cubbies, with Dubya as President and Arnold as Governor, there were already too many strang things going on. Dooky

I’d like nothing better than to see this Bartman get a nice job with the Marlins mgmt in the offseason.

You guys criticizing Steve Bartman really have to ask yourselves if you wouldn’t have done the same thing if you had been there. Virtually everyone tries to get a ball. As someone pointed out, a Yankee fan touched Matsui’s hit last night, potentially costing the Yankees a run, and none of the commentators even mentioned it. That was much worse than what Bartman did because the ball was in play and the fan obviously knew that. Fans reach for baseballs. Always have, always will.

Steve Bartman is a complete idiot. Who wears headphones at baseball games? No wonder he couldn’t see big guy like Alou flying down the line. Plus all grownups trying to catch a freakin foul balls are morons anyway. Give the freakin ball to the first kid nearby you premature ejaculators. Oh but he’s not the reason Cubs lost. It’s Dusty Baker who for 3 million bucks doesn’t feel like getting his lazy ass up to talk to his 22-year old pitcher. You talking about a curse? I tell you about the curse. 2002 Giants, 2003 All-Star Game, 2003 Cubs. Dusty really has some magic going for him. And a flare for a big game. F..in loser!!!!

Don’t underestimate Florida. They are a dangerous team that will give New York a bloody nose if disrespected. They are not a team that will lay down for the Yankees like the Twins and Red Sox did. They will fight back time and time again. They will not be intimidated by the Yankee mistique. Take that bit of advice from a Phillies fan.

Now all anyone can do is look forward to next year.Wrigley Field is a beautiful historical
statium. The Cubs are great and I’m not sure about a curse but when folks hear about a curse it
takes over like a leach in the minds of people.
It’s like a suggestion which invades a person’s
space.
As for Steve Bartman.I have to agree with the
creator of this site.Yes people had their hands
up but they weren’t reaching for the ball the way
he did.Steve needed more of a team spirit,so he
could have fought the urge to reach out. Some people aren’t as aware of what’s around them and
they have a knee jerk reaction.
I don’t know why some people think the Cubs suck.
Each team has an individual mix which works for or against them.I do think Steve’s catching the
ball caused a lack of momentum.Cubs lost
focus,it happens.Fan interference should have been called.
Steve seems like the shy quiet type.Did you ever
go to summer camp? This reminds me of summer camp where there’s one person who doesn’t fit in and they do something dorky and the whole summmer
camp hates them. They make the volleyball team
lose.I swear this reminded me so much of summer camp when this dorky girl messed it up for the
rest of us.I felt like beating her up but what
stopped me was her inability to be aware enough
to relate to others. But I do so understand
the rage at this guy,but he will probably take
up that offer and move to Florida.

Ok…I am not a 100% Cubs fan, dur to my father taking me to Sox games when I was younger, but I did grow up on the northside and grew on to them (collecting cards of Dunston, Dawson, Grace and last but not least Rhino).
Questions at hand: Did the fan interfere? Yes he did. Was it within the rails? Yes could,ev Alou caught it? Who know, for anyone to say that he would’ve might as well be hung for sorcery or will become rich because he has the talent of seeing the future and things that “might have” happened. With this being lets look at everything in perpective…having 1 out and first and second base occupied and 2 outs and man on first are totally different. Obviously the pitcher might pitch a different game.
Who knows, if Alou wouldve have caught that ball we might have lost worse, or might have won.
Yeah many fans are in search for Steve to have a “sit down” with him but WTF!!! I would have beeb all over the ball trying to catch it too.

Go to Florida! The women are pretty, youll be raised on peoples shoulders, you have South Beach and shuffle board. Disney is all but hours away and more go carts to drive than any other place on the earth. have a little room set up in your basement with cubs memorabilia, lock it up when youre done and go back to being in a f#ckin mansion where rap videos are shot and all the women a man can want are all over you.
Collect checks from the government since you did increase Marlins revenue. And grow old.
Take care.

OK, I am sick and tired of hearing about this Steve Bartman crap. I am a huge Cubs fan, and have been since I’ve known baseball, so pretty much since I was born here in Aberdeen, South Dakota (Go Aberdeen Central Football…8-0). Anyway, back to what i’m here to talk about. Any non-Cubs fan and any Cubs fan can say whatever the hell they want, but as far as I know, Steve Bartman is not at fault. Those of you that think it was 100% his fault don’t know what you’re talking about. What you don’t realize is that there was only 1 out, and a guy on base. 2 plays later, Alex Gonzalez had a huge error, a rarity for him as he only had 9 errors all year in the regular season. Kyle Farnsworth, who is a part of a very inconsistent bullpen, showed that he was part of a very inconsistent bullpen by throwing the wrong pitches to the wrong players.
Steve Bartman was just a fan catching a foul-ball, something you would’ve done, you can argue with me about this, but I will win. I would’ve done the same thing, it could have been me, and it could have been any of you, he just happened to be the one to be in that seat. I work at a radio station here in Aberdeen, and I was here board-opping the game, so in turn, listening to the Cubs play while getting paid. I heard the guys from ESPN Radio say a Cubs fan knocked the ball out of Alou’s glove. Granted, I was pissed, but I saw the highlights, I watched the game over because I recorded it, and there were people 3 rows back going for that ball. So tell me again that you wouldn’t do that, I dare you to.
Like I said, I am a die-hard Cubs fan, a senior in high school, royalty during homecoming (out of a class of about 300 people), and very well known throughout my school to being a Cubs fan. So, when I woke up the morning after the Cubs lost Game 7, I wore my Sammy Sosa jersey to school with a lot of pride. I expected to get crap from fellow students, but instead, I got sorrow. Why? Because they also wanted the Cubs to win. I did get some crap from people, those people of course, were Marlins fans, terribly. But as a Cub fan, I will blame the loss on the players who lost it, for they were the ones that played the game, not the fans. And I am saying, like I have said every year, “There’s Always Next Year.”

Even Cubs fans from South Dakota are saying this.

The average IQ is, by defenition, 100. That means that there are many people out there whose IQs fall below 100 (don’t forget that the avg IQ for people with down’s syndrome is ~80). This is especially true in Chicago (where I was born, raised, and currently live)where the public school system is one of the worst in the nation. It is therefore not surprising that many people are blaming Steve Bartman for the Cubs’ inability to win the series. My point is this: Anyone with ANY sense realizes that the Cubs’ meltdown was not due to Steve Bartman. Furthermore, those of you who insist on attributing the Cubs’ demise to him are………well……..stupid.

Subject: College letter sent home

Dear Mom and Dad,

It has now been three months since I left for college. I have been remiss
in writing this and I am very sorry for my thoughtlessness in not having
written before. I will bring you up to date now, but, before you read on,
please sit down.

YOU ARE NOT TO READ ANY FURTHER UNLESS YOU ARE

SITTING DOWN, OKAY?

Well then, I am getting along pretty well now. The skull fracture, and the
concussion I got when I jumped out of the window of my dormitory when it
caught fire shortly after my arrival, are pretty well Healed now.

Fortunately, the fire in the dormitory and my jump, were witnessed by an
attendant at the gas station near the dorm. He was the one who called the
fire department and the ambulance. He also visited me at the hospital, and
since I had nowhere to live because of the burned out dormitory, he was
kind enough to invite me to share his apartment with him and his three
buddies. It’s really a basement room, but it’s kind of cute.

He is a very fine boy and we have fallen deeply in love and are planning
to be married. We haven’t set the exact date yet, but it will be before my
pregnancy begins to show. Yes, Mom and Dad, I am pregnant. I know how
much you are looking forward to being grandparents! I know you will welcome
the baby and give it the love, devotion and tender care you gave me when I
was a child.

The reason for the delay in our marriage is that my boyfriend has some
minor infection which prevents us from passing our pre-marital blood tests, and
I carelessly caught it from him. This will soon clear up with the penicillin
injections I am having daily. I know you will welcome him into our family
with open arms. He is kind and, although not well educated, he is
ambitious.

Although he is of a different race and religion than ours, I know your
often expressed tolerance will not permit you to be bothered by the fact that
his skin color is different than ours. I am sure you will love him as I do.
His family background is good, too, for I am told that his father is an
important weapons dealer in the village in Africa from which he came. Now
that I have brought you up to date, I want to tell you that there was no
dormitory fire, I did not have a concussion or a skull fracture. I was
not in the hospital, I am not pregnant and I am not engaged. I do not have
syphilis and there is no man (of any color) in my life. However, I got a
‘D’ in History and an ‘F’ in Science, and I wanted you to see those marks in
the proper perspective.

Your Loving Daughter
Linda.

Funny to see what little people actually know about sports… Baseball and a lot of other sports have a momentumn to the game - when things are going good they usually keep going that way. That is why you see some innings with just 3 outs and some with 5 - 8 or so runs. Same with football. BUT when something interupts that momentumn, everything else is interupted as well. So, when that fan interupted the game - the chain reaction was a loss. SO, if you knew that much about sports - you would know why the fan is to blame.

INTERFERENCE
(a) Offensive interference is an act by the team at bat which interferes with, obstructs, impedes, hinders or confuses any fielder attempting to make a play. If the umpire declares the batter, batter runner, or a runner out for interference, all other runners shall return to the last base that was in the judgment of the umpire, legally touched at the time of the interference, unless otherwise provided by these rules. In the event the batter runner has not reached first base, all runners shall return to the base last occupied at the time of the pitch.
(b) Defensive interference is an act by a fielder which hinders or prevents a batter from hitting a pitch.
(c) Umpire’s interference occurs (1) When an umpire hinders, impedes or prevents a catcher’s throw attempting to prevent a stolen base, or (2) When a fair ball touches an umpire on fair territory before passing a fielder.
(d) Spectator interference occurs when a spectator reaches out of the stands, or goes on the playing field, and touches a live ball. On any interference the ball is dead.

The umpire is at fault!

Lady 31, I totally agree with you 100%. Mike, if you knew anything about sports, you would know that professionals get out of jams, and that a fan who catches a foul ball, or in your case “interrupted” a foul ball wouldn’t matter. He didn’t lose it just like i said in my other message. The Cubs lost it, all of you fans who want to “kill” Bartman or whatever should also get a life. Like I said before, I am a huge Cubs fan here in South Dakota, and I’m going to blame this loss on the players, they got outplayed.
If you’re going to cry about a loss and blame it on a fan, you are not a true Cub’s fan. Cub’s fans are the best losers in the country, “Loveable Losers” as the organization and the fans are referred to. Don’t change this around because of a Cubs fan who is deeply sorry about this.
Dan, if you were offered millions to make a movie about this, you would. I guarantee it, plus, it’s Disney, it’s not like it’s going to be good now anyway.
Just know that Cubs fans in South Dakota don’t think it’s Bartman’s fault, because we are true Cubs fans.
