The Long, Hard Road To Validation

October 08, 2003 | Comments 3 Comments

As part of my progressive enhancement efforts I’m trying to get this site as valid to Web standards as possible. As I’ve often mentioned (bitched about), this is easier said than done. In fact, it can be a downright pain in the ass.

For the most part my site validates. It’s the mainly the little “extras” that I’m having problems with. I could stick to my guns and just leave them as is, but I feel like it’d be in my best interest, for a few reasons, to give them a shot at validation.

At this point I’m looking at XHTML 1.0 Transitional, although I imagine that if I can get that to go, I should have no problems with XHTML 1.0 Strict.

So far I’ve been able to get my Song of The Week player to validate, using the Flash Satay method, although I’m sure I’ll have to change that at some-point due to the whole Eolas thing. I’m in the process (lots of cut and paste) of getting all of the MTAmazon stuff valid as well as eliminating anything I can find in my entries. Luckily there isn’t much there. I hope.

My biggest problems are coming from URLs with ampersands and the like, they’re fairly easy to handle via MT, but for those small pieces of the site that live outside the MT framework, I’ve got no clue. If anyone has any experience getting links generated by Waxy backlinks and/or KungTunes (which is currently broken because of Panther) to validate, please comment here with your solutions.

I could very easily ditch those features, and I may, but for now I’ll keep digging and see if I can’t get them valid.

I use the non-flash satay method to validate embed code. Zeldman talks about that in yesterday’s post

I couldn’t get Waxy to work, so I used Little Green Football’s method instead and it validates. I don’t know about kung tunes. My page validates, but I’m not digging the tags that the google api drops into the search results.

Well think I’ve gotten everything valid, with the exception of the Waxy backlinks and Kung Tunes. Both of those are invalid due to bad characters in the links. I’m pretty sure I can live with that.

Check the improvements I made to the flash container used in this method… the example download I got is a Textpattern Plugin but the improved container works in any setup. Go download it and have a look to the source to see how it is done… With the improved version you get the missing paramters like showmenu, align and quality… back.
