The Sandman: Endless Nights

Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite authors and The Sandman series is one of my all time favorite stories.
Endless Nights doesn’t really fit with the Sandman series as a whole, but is a nice addition in a stand-alone role. It recounts one story each from Dream and his siblings, each told by Neil and illustrated by a different artist.
These stories take different form, each seemingly tailored to the Endless the story is about. They go from the bleak, dreary and rather, well, desperate illustrations and scattered prose of Despair, to the quirky randomness of Delirium, to the traditional comic story form of Dream’s story.
Overall I enjoyed the book, all the artwork was terrific and you have to love Dave McKean’s design work. As was expected Neil’s prose was excellent, but it kind of left me wishing for something with more meat, and more of a complete story.
Fans of Neil and the Sandman will love this book, despite it’s incomplete feel. If you are looking for more story try The Lucifer Books by Mike Carey, they’re set in The Endless universe and are a shining example of great comic storytelling — much like the Sandman that came before them.

the artwork in Endless Nights is awesome. and of course, Gaiman’s writing is just superb. true, the looseness of the work in its entirety does leave me wanting a bit more, but… anyway, it’s great. my favorite is probably “15 Portraits of Despair,” even though she’s far from one of my favorite Endless. i rather liked her previous incarnation (for lack of a better description), as shown in “The Heart of a Star.”

My brother (18) bought me this book as soon as it came out, knowing I’m a big fan of anything Neil Gaiman. I am taking a college class on the Sandman right now, actually :) so I haven’t had time to read it yet, but the artwork is beautiful, the characters themselves are intrigueing, and Neil Gaiman is, hands down, my favorite Author. I would recommend his graphic novels (Seasons of Mists and the Kindly Ones) as well, and also Coraline, for a nice, short read!

the art here is just sublime. Every page takes at least ten minutes to get through becuase one needs to soak in all of the painstaking detail in every cell. The stories of course are spell-binding and beautiful, as always. They’ve done it again!
