XAML?

Heard of XAML? Well, it’s like XUL — Microsoft-ized. Read more here.
Looks like neat stuff huh? We shall see. Sometime is 2007, or wait, knowing how long it takes folks to upgrade their OS (I know people still on WIN 98), maybe 2009? 2010?
Anyway.
There has been quite a bit of response, speculation and theorizing going on about this, as is to be expected. Eric Meyer wrote a very good piece that pretty much sums up the situation with Microsoft, XAML and the possible threat they could bring to the way the Web works. My feelings on the matter fall in line with his for the most part.
Thing is it’s much to early for me to really get my head around what the effect of something like this would have on the Web as a whole. We won’t see this for years and a whole lot can happen between now and then.
Honestly this looks a bit like “same shit, different day.” Regardless, I’ll be keeping my eye on it.
Here is a round up of what some others are saying about this:
More to come I’m sure…

I realise I’m going against the traditional grain, but this could be a great addition to other MS applications while utilising something like SharePoint Portal Server.
For example, if your organization was using SPS for the intranet, you could “skin” the look and feel of your organization’s office suite to ease the transition between viewing the intranet and editing documents.
Not that I’m Microsoft’s best friend or anything, but there could be some great uses (as well as abuses) for this technology.

I don’t think many people are saying that xaml is all bad. There is just a great fear about MS history and the the fact that many do not want to be tied into a IE only web. This fear may turn out to be completely unjustified, and xaml may turn out to be our best friend. But…

Scottbp brings up a good point. While I am a bit worried (based on history) I’m not ready to discount what could be a cool technology before I know more.
Since it looks like we won’t know more for a really long time, it’s a bit early to speculate too much.

I think this is the natural direction of UI.
They are emulating Delphi, GTK, and a number of other GUI systems.
As for HTML, it needs to be replaced badly. I think Netscape and W3C are a bunch of idiots for all the crap they have produced.
XML could have been so much better as well. Only a matter of time before someone gets it right.

XAML is XUL beaten black and blue from behind, so that it does not become a standard.
This Microsoft is big copycat, but with a style. Someone innovates very brilliant things. Microsoft just copies whole thing, and make it slightly incompatible with original and then in course of time, they gobble up the whole originator of the concept. Be it anything. They have so much money, cant they produce something INNOVATIVE ( BUT NOT COPIED) on their own.
Had they implemented XUL in entirety without incompatibilities, how wonderfully cross-browser concept it would have been, a great leap for next level of abstraction for UI.
