Is 800 x 600 OK?

Summary: I’m designing a web site as a favour to a friend. (I’m an experienced amateur.) Early on we need to settle on the size of the page — the resolution, if you will — because he wants some relatively inflexible stuff that won’t “liquid” easily. If the audience for the site is a very general audience, what size do you think I should fix on. I’m saying 800 x 600 (with the small qualification for Mac). Am I right?

Without knowing all the details of the project this one is a bit hard to answer, but I would imagine that; yes, you can go with 800x600 as your resoultion and be fairly sure it’ll be alright for a general audience.
