Creeping Death by MetallicaThe Artist: Metallica
The Song: Creeping Death
The Album: Ride The Lightning
Released 1984

I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s and for much of that time my favorite music was rock. When I was little my older brother introduced to to quite a bit of different styles and artists from Led Zeppelin to The Sex Pistols.

I went through a phase when I was about 12 years old where I was really into “classic” heavy metal. Bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath and Dio were pretty much all I listened to. Until I discovered new wave.

I spent most of my high school life listening to what we called “skater music” at the time. Lots of wave, early industrial, goth and progressive rock. During that time I almost completely forgot my rock and metal roots. The closest I came to that was probably Ministry, not the really early With Sympithy stuff (which I loved) but the more harder edged stuff. Until Metallica came along.

With Kill ‘Em All I had found a rock band that I could respect. Most of the harder rock in the 80’s was just plain goofy. It’s great for karaoke, but aside from that, it’s pretty lame.

I’m not into Metallica much any more, the black album is pretty much the last one I got into and the new stuff is kind of weak. Throughout the late 80’s and early 90’s they were one of my favorite bands and they also mark some of the best shows I’ve seen.

If you like to rock you’ll love this week’s song. “Creeping Death” from Ride The Lightning is probably my favorite Metallica song from my favorite Metallica album. It’s got everything I like about these Metal gods. Quick change-ups, a torrid rhythm, screaming guitar solos, biblical lyrics — it’s a perfect metal anthem.

Ride the Lightning was not released in 1990, I believe it was released in 1984.

The differnce being that post …And Justice For All Metallica was when the decline of the band began.

Now they are just a pathetice shell of a formerly great band.

Of course you’re right Jason – my bad – not sure what I was thinking there. Might have forgot to update the date. I build these entries off a template. Anyway 1984 it is, and I’ve updated the entry to reflect that.

While I agree they are a shell of what they once were, I do think they put out a few good bits after …And Justice For All.
