In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth:3 by MetallicaThe Artist: Coheed and Cambria
The Song: In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth:3
The Album: In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth:3
Released 2003

Welcome to the first Song of The Week of 2004! If you’ve been with me from the beginning (and I know many of you have!) you know I’ve got a love for music and very little can excite me more than discovering a new band or artist for myself.

The amazingly talented Coheed and Cambria are perhaps my favorite discovery of the last year, and I only just found them a few weeks ago. Talk about saving the best for last.

In the last two weeks I’ve been listening almost non-stop to not only the album from which this week’s song comes, In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth:3, but Coheed and Cambria’s previous release Second Stage Turbine Blade.

Both albums are amazing. I guess if you had to classify them you would place them in the “Emo” or “Scream-core” genre, but I rather think they defy classification.

They’re intelligent, emotional, complicated and energetic rock. Much like Brand New, another band that seems to get labeled as “Emo” when they seem much more than that. Also like Brand New — they are a band to watch and they have a penchant for long song titles!

The musical, lyrical and artistic talent of Coheed and Cambria is off the chart. These guys have a real knack for making deep, complicated and emotional tracks that don’t have any of the whiny pretentiousness that you expect from “art rock” or “emo” bands. In front of it all you have Claudio Sanchez, who has one of the most unique and strong vocal styles I’ve heard in a long time.

The word I would use to describe this album is “epic.” In many ways it reminds me of what Mars Volta did with De-Loused in the Comatorium, but it’s a bit more accessible.

I highly recommend either one of Coheed and Cambria’s albums and keep an eye out for these guys in 2004.

Recommended if you like: Brand New, Mars Volta, Thursday, Thrice, Sparta, Taking Back Sunday

Coheed is one of my new favortie bands. I just wish I liked the new stuff as much as like Second Stage Turbine. Oh well, maybe it will grow on me. Can’t wait to see them live.

I just downloaded this at random before reading this entry, and I like it a good amount. I don’t think the song you posted quite as much though…a little bit too “single sounding” for me. But the album as a whole is really good. Nice call!

I discovered Coheed and Cambria when I was at a friend’s house. I fell in love with them at once. The first song I heard by them was “A Favor House Atlantic.” But I’m sure you don’t want to hear about my life story or anything. Just, if you happen to be bored and “accidently” stumble upon this site, and you don’t know who they are, then be smart and find out. They’re the greatest band ever. They have wonderful lyrics that you sometimes have to listen to over and over again before you understand them. So if anyone has ever told you that they don’t like to be labeled, then know, there are some things that cannot be classified as only one thing. The perfect example IS Coheed and Cambria.
