The Artist: Danger Mouse and Jemini
The Song: Omega Supreme
The Album: Ghetto Pop Life
Released 2003
Sorry I’m a day late on this one, I’m knee deep in projects. I actually got some e-mail asking where this week’s song was! That was pretty cool, I love hearing how you guys enjoy the SOW.
Hopefully it’ll be worth the wait. I know I’ve been waiting for something like Ghetto Pop Life to come around for quite awhile. It’s fun, fresh, new and yet feels old school at the same time. In a word — Brilliant.
Well, to be honest, it’s not the album in specific, but a hip-hop album like it. As a true fan of hip-hop I really wish there were more albums like this and more acts out there like DM and Jemini. There are lot’s of great hip-hop acts out there, but not many with the vibe that DM and Jemini bring.
They remind me of Black Star with a bit more variety added in. Ghetto Pop Life showcases a wide range of hip-hop styles from a duo that is not lacking in talent. Danger Mouse’s beats are wicked (some remind me of DJ Shadow) his production is great and the lyrical style of Jemini is one of the best I’ve heard in awhile. Listen to the freestyle at the end of “Omega Supreme.”
I needed a breath of fresh air from the hip-hop scene and this was it.
If you’re into hip-hop do yourself a favor and check this out — you’ll not be disappointed. Oh and if you love good CD (and record) packaging this is one of the best. The visual design is great. If you usually buy music digitally online (wink wink) this might be a good one to run down to the store for.
