Back(ground) By Popular Demand

February 20, 2004 | Comments 11 Comments

I had so many people lament the removal of my old background pattern I decided to bring it back. I always liked it myself, but I was really surprised at how many people missed it.

It was actually a bit more complicated that it would have seemed.

Took me a couple hours last night to get it worked out and create the new images, and here I thought it was going to be easy. I’ve not seen what it looks like on a Windows machine yet, but it looks fine in all the Mac browsers.

Lemme know if you see anything strange with it.

Oh, that was a nice one. What’s it based on?

It’s a secret. Let’s just say…um…it’s from a “found object” of sorts. I’ve used lots of backgrounds like that in the past. If you want to take a guess maybe I’ll let the cat out of the bag, but I’m not giving in that easy. ;)

Looks like it could be from a really decorative paper towel, or tapestry curtain. The only reason i say paper towel is because of the faint diamond patter behind the darker pattern.

anyway…I too missed it. seems to give the site more depth and the standard blue just didn’t seem to cut it.

looks great on win2k with firebird0.7.

Ahh, that’s better. IMO your design is detail complete now. Looking forward to the day when you make a tutorial series “1001 psychadelic backgrounds” ;) Probably used the Pattern Maker in PS. The pattern might be handdrawn or indeed from some curtain or towel or similiar.

Looks good on WinXP / FireFox 0.8. When I scale the fonts the Comments box still gets a little too big. You might try a max-width: /* wait, getting my screen ruler, ah, yes about */ 430px;

Hmm… From wallpaper? I say that because I remember a story of a certain auto company that got their logo from a piece of wallpaper.

Anyways, it looks nice! The background seems to be your signature. :) Are the drop shadows going to be changed to PNGs for capable browsers? I’m using Safari.

Well wherever the background came from it’s popular:

http://kopfblog.be/

If memory serves, Kopfblog has had that pattern for some time. If you originated it I guess he must have made it blue from your black version, unless you both got it from the same source?

The background is mine, well the online version anyway, I’m happy to say. I’ve had it as part of my site for a long, long time. What’s cool is that Micha (the designer of Kopfblog) was kind enough to send me an email asking permission to use it.

I’ve been copied without permission and it’s not quite as fun that way.

Anyway, the original online version was green, actually. It was part of Asterisk’s first design.

All the guesses are good, some close, but none quite it. Wallpaper is a great one that I’ve used before. Another good source is wrapping paper.

No, this pattern came from the inside cover of a book. Now if someone could guess the book I’d be really impressed.

Hmm… This whole thing really inspires me to try creating (or finding) my own patterns. I’d have to say that the Asterisk* pattern is the most intriguing I’ve seen. I usually get mine from K10K (which, by the way, is a great source for a lot more than just patterns).

I could try listing a bunch of aimless guesses here as to which book the pattern came from, but no need. :P

The background looks great Keith…as does the whole redesign. The pattern adds a sense of sophistication and makes the content of the page really stand out; it’s a huge difference.

I too like the idea of searching for patterns in non-typical places…your site is an inspiration to many. Keep up the good work!
