This past Sunday I had some friends over to watch the Husky / NC State game, barbrque and drink a few beers. I wanted to take advantage of the unseasonable, yet amazingly nice, weather we were having.
One of my friends took a butchers at my coffee table, which had just been cleaned and straightened in anticipation of this gathering, and remarked, “you can really tell a lot about a person by what they have on their coffee table.”
I wonder what she thought of this particular arrangement? What you don’t see if my GamePro (NERD ALERT) magazine there underneath Courtside.
I wonder, are we, to some degree, what we read? Shudder.

All you can tell is that you read basically the same magazines as most other people. Those are pretty much the same things I’d see at my dentist’s office or something. It’s not like they’re obscure French cinema journals or bizarre porn or something

I kind of think that was what she was getting at. That I’m “your average guy.” You know, the target demographic for Spike TV and such.
She’s probably right.

That seems to be your average reading fare for males. I read Wired and (not to be renewed) PC Gamer for the most part.
I read Maxim too, but that’s mandatory because I’m college. I’m sure that’ll be replaced by something classier like GQ or Esquire a little while down the road, of course. :)
And I have to admit, Slamball on Spike TV is quite possibly the coolest sport ever.

I’m more into Maxim myself. I got hooked up with GQ for free. To be honest, it’s not half bad. You can see by the cover there that they are turning a bit to aim more at the Maxim crowd.
Speaking of Maxim. Anyone played the Maxim Office Game?? I’ve not played in awhile, but it’s a fun one.

I used to inhale magazines back from 1995-2000 (i.e. various PC computer magazines, computer gaming magazines, Business 2.0, Fast Company, and maybe a Wired and GQ every once in a while), probably buying at least six to eight magazines a month.
Today? I have a hard time even buying one. I just can’t find the content I’m looking for (which is appropriate with regards to your other post about content), as I find there is just too much crap out there. My wife did just get me a National Geographic Adventure subscription as a present though and I’ve decided to get a National Geographic subscription for myself, as it brings back fond memories of being a kid and seeing the world thru its pages and photos.

Hmm… I read Asterisk*… What’s that say about me? ;)
Really though, I think I’m pretty typical. I read most of what everyone else reads, though I do try to find less proliferated publications, as they often provide a unique insight that media giants don’t.

Two magazines you don’t see here that I love and read on a pretty regular basis are Dwell and Readymade. I also enjoy Spin.
Nollind – I hear what you are saying about finding content. That is one of the reason I kept my trial subscription of Rolling Stone. It’s very easy to get around.
Chris – Reading Asterisk* says you’re the mack daddy’s daddy.
For more interesting views on magazines, read 52 magazines or bust over at Kottke. I wonder how that is going.

Like everyone else has been saying, it’s a pretty standard coffee table stuff. I have most of your pictured mags on mine right now. If there’s something wrong with that 40th Anniversary SI, then I don’t want to be right!! That Petra Nemcova picture in the cotton field… DAMN!! I don’t know why she’s soaking wet in the middle of a cotton field, and I don’t care.
But aside from girly mags, you have to have a copy of Maximum PC lying around, to raise your geek quotient, and make yourself feel worse about your current crappy hardware.
Although the ladies don’t usually look very impressed by that stuff when they visit me. So to distract them I usually put out some art/photo magazines on the table as well, just so they think I have other interests : )
(BTW your comment posting script wouldnt let me use the word… I’m going to have to be clever about this… ollection-c, what’s up with that?)
