St. Patrick’s Day is one of my all time favorite holidays. To me it’s always been about great times, Guinness, good friends, dancing and music. One of my favorite bands throughout the years, Irish or otherwise, has been The Pogues.
What can I say about The Pogues. They’re a true classic. Shane MacGowan has one of the most interesting and strangely endearing vocal styles I’ve ever heard and they’ve got a sounds that has stuck with me since I fist heard them way back.
The Pogues are a band for all times and for many genres. They’ve managed to blend traditional style Irish music with early punk and many other things in-between, creating a very distinct style that is theirs alone.
I’ve spent many a St. Patty’s Day listening to live music and it seems that just about every time, in between sets, the whole pub will shake to classic Pogues. In that way, they’ve been part of the holiday. It’s just a cryin’ shame I’ve never seen them live.
This year will be my first St. Patrick’s Day spent out of Seattle in quite a while, and I’ll miss the yearly Dash and Bash. This one’s for my good friend Mike Hill. I’ll miss you this year buddy. Here’s one for you. It’s a classic!

Right on. The Pogues were a special band and If I Should Fall… is one of my favorite albums. Isn’t it amazing that Shane MacGowan is still alive?

Good to see another US Pogues fan. Haven’t found many in the States. I first discovered them in college and have loved them since. Hell’s Ditch is probably my favorite album of theirs.

Oh, I definitely love the genre, I’ll have to check them out when I get a chance.
I’ll get to see Flogging Molly perform live in about two weeks. I’m all-encompassingly looking forward to it :)

Ah, the Pogues. I have seen them quite a few times over the years. They were always very special. They had that rare power and emotion. I have two sons, and the only music we can all agree on is The Pogues.
