SXSW Downtime

March 16, 2004 | Comments 13 Comments

Today I’m taking a bit of a break from the amazingly fun craziness that’s been SXSW.

It’s the last day of the interactive portion of the conference and I’ve been partying like a “Webstar” the last few nights. I’m going to hook up with my brothers (one older, one younger) tomorrow and we’ll be kicking up that partying to rockstar levels for the rest of SXSW.

Some highlights:

  • The CSS panels were great. Enough said.
  • I’m unofficially Jeff Veen’s #1 fan. He took over for Jesse James Garrett (who I was really looking forward to seeing) and did a wonderful job with his user-centered design presentation. He talked about (in a much more eloquent way) many of the very things I talk about every day here at Asterisk*.
  • Spent way to much time convincing people I’m not gay. I’ve run into at least one person every day here who thought I was gay. Not sure why. Don’t really care much. I do find it a bit funny.
  • Met the guys (very briefly) from OK/Cancel. Great guys and very funny. From Seattle! Oh, and they gave me a Jakob Nielsen trading card.
  • Had lunch Monday with Jay Allen, Matt May, Anitra Pavka, Nick, Simon, and Ian. Talked about the weather in Kansas, reality TV and raccoon porn. That was fun.
  • Tried to get Nick drunk for his birthday. He wimped out.
  • Talked about software easter eggs with Nick Bradbury.
  • Heard a funny story about how Josh busted his grandmother smoking.
  • Got educated about Red vs. Blue. Thanks Jeremy and Ste.
  • Posed for some great photos.
  • Shared a fried green tomato with Molly. It was pretty good actually. Not as good as her company.
  • Hit up Mark for a Digital Web article. Should be a good one.
  • Had a few beers with Ethan. He and I got ditched at one point, but it was fun. Great guy.

Ahh, well, There’s lots more, but that’ll do for now. I’m now off to add to and update my links list. You know I’m XFN friendly. It may take awhile, but I’m here until Sunday. Look for some more updates, and maybe some photos. I’ve got a feeling the music part of SXSW is going to be pretty crazy.

I wish y’all could be down here for that!

Sounds busy, but fun.

I’ve had people tell me they thought I was gay. I can see why though. I’m usually ambiguous about my love life. Plus I find both sexes to be equally attractive so that throws people off. I don’t try to dissuade people either way as I don’t see why it should matter to anyone if I’m gay or straight.

Agreed. I find it a bit funny is all, it really doesn’t bother me. It has seemed to happen quite a bit since I’ve landed in Texas. When I ask why the usual answer is because of the way I dress and talk.

My west coast accent or something? And anyway, can’t straight people dress well? I don’t know, I guess I should take it as a compliment. ;0)

Wow.

If I would have known that Veen was sitting in for Garrett on the usability panel, I wouldn’t have taken that earlier flight home.

Oh well. Veen is a great speaker. Really dynamic. Basically stole the show at the Accessibility is for Everyone panel on saturday.

Great meeting you this weekend Keith. Not sure why people would think you were gay…

Maybe its your keen fashion sense (flashback to red plaid cowboy shirt for web awards)!

First of all, let me apologize for the forwardness of some of my fellow statesmen. I really enjoyed getting a chance to meet you. Nice to finally put a face to the man behind the insightful articles. Oh,and nice to know that I’m not the only fan of Justin Timberlake’s solo album. Err…sorry if I’m “outting” you on that one.

Well anyway, have a great time at the music protion of SXSW 2004 and anytime your back in Austin feel free to drop me a line.

It was definately cool to meet you Keith. As far as being back in Austin, I’m quite sure I’ll be back next year as well!

Hopefully you’ll be able to make it as well Josh!

Nothing wrong with dressing nice… Then again, nothing wrong with being homosexual either.

I wish I could have attended, but nay. Maybe next time! I still have to meet Simon Willison in Lawrence whenever he has the meet-up he mentioned on Andy Budd’s blog.

Wouldn’t normally pull you up on typos, but your brothers might take offence to being referred to as “bothers”… I’m sure from the way you refer to them that they are not as much of a pain in the butt as my brother is…

Thanks mattymeg – They’re not “bothers” but that was pretty funny. My time has been a bit short and my thoughts scattered today, thus the typos! Too much fun making me a bit slow.

And I just found out about more fun tonight.

Guess I’ve got to go to Bruce Sterling’s infamous SXSWi closing party. Wasn’t planning on it but I guess I “have to go.” I think tonight I’ll lug the camera around.

Agreed that Jeff Veen was beyond great! He came flying into our Saturday panel (just arrived, late plane, etc) and proceeded to liven up the morning immeasurably. Good stuff, to the point, well presented. And…great to chat with you yesterday as well, Nigel. Rock on at SXSW Music!

What’s wrong with soda (and that’s “coke” for those who are from out of town) and PF Changs? I was thirsty and tea wasn’t going to cut it.

Too bad we didn’t get to chat more but it was great meeting you. For clarification, Tom is from Seattle. I’m from Vancouver but living in London. And to further muddy the waters, both Tom and I used to live in Austin.

Raccoon porn. Damnit. I miss all the good lunches.
