It’s been all together too light with the Song of The Week lately — high time for a change I say! We need something different…something heavy. Enter Probot, Dave Grohl’s long awaited death-metal side project.

I don’t have a whole lot of exposure to good metal anymore, but it’s a genre that over the years that I’ve always had a soft (pun intended) spot for. I’m also a huge fan of Grohl, so when I first heard about Probot, I was very interested.

It seems like it took forever to get here, there has been talk about Probot for years, but it’s finally here and it rocks. Hard. It’s not the best metal I’ve ever heard, and it jumps all over the place as far as style goes, kind of like a compilation, but it’s got some heavy hitters making an appearance and it’s better than much of what I’ve heard of late.

Grohl has taken some metal legends; Snake, Cronos, King Diamond, Lemmy, and Lee Dorian among others, and knocked out a kind of “metal’s greatest hits” album. Every song is very true to it’s collaborators, they all rock in their own away and a few are downright classic.

This week’s song, “Ice Cold Man”, for example, seems a lot like an ode to one of the greatest metal songs ever — Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man.” Give it a listen and you’ll see what I mean. If you’re looking for metal, and you need to get your rock on, look no further than Probot.
