The Artist: Styles of Beyond
The Song: Eurobiks
The Album: Megadef
Released 2003
Megadef by Styles of Beyond has been out for quite awhile but it’s fairly new to me. I wish I’d found it a bit earlier, it’s a good one. I’ve been a fan of them for a little while, but this 2nd album has turned me into a mega-fan.
Corny — I know.
This latest album is a bit different than the previous work by SOB. While they used to be pretty straightforward underground hip-hop, they now seem to have come with a more accessible sound.
In more than one way they remind me of one of my favorites — Swollen Members. They’ve taken underground hip-hop beats and sensibilities and blended that with a more pop sound that showcases many different influences.
SOB is quite obviously into lots of different music, there’s a little heavy metal in there, some old school hip-hop and lots of 80’s. The sampling and production are very tight and Megadef makes for a great hip-hop party album.
My favorite thing about this album is this week’s song “Eurobiks”. The first time I heard this song I about drove off the road. The main sample and beat for “Eurobiks” is from one of my all time favorite Euro-beat club tunes from the 80’s.
I’m sure many of you may have never heard it, but it’s a great song and SOB have done a excellent job of tapping into that old school Euro sound, laying their own style, beats and rhymes over it to come up with one of my favorite songs in awhile.
Give it a listen, and if you think you know your 80’s — give a guess as to the original song and artist.

It doesn’t matter much, but I thought I’d just point out you missed the SOW: you usually include at the beginning of the title in your Song of the Week posts.
Continuity is king! :)

Actually I did that on purpose. I’ve decided that the SOW in the title is pretty meaningless, so I dropped it. I could put it back if someone thinks there is a good reason for it…
