Song of The Week One Year Old

May 13, 2004 | Comments 8 Comments

Today marks the first (hopefully of many) birthday of my little Song of The Week feature. It’s been loads of fun this first year and I’m pretty sure I only missed one week! That’s 51 weeks. Wow.

Thanks to everyone who’s commented on my choices and the hundreds of folks who’ve sent me e-mail showing their appreciation over the year. It’s been really fun to do and I’m very glad people out there like it.

A few highlights from the past year:

  • May 13th, 2003. My first song. “Freakish” by Saves The Day. Still love STD but their follow-up album wasn’t near as good as their old stuff.
  • June 13th, 2003. I featured “No Regrets” by Aesop Rock. One of the best MCs to hit the mike ever.
  • August 1st, 2003. This week song was by the excellent Postal Service. I’m going to see them in a few weeks and I can’t wait.
  • August 22nd, 2003. “I’m Gone” by Kenna. This was the first and only time an actual artist I reviewed contacted me. He commented as well. Too cool!
  • September 26th, 2003. This week I featured Snow Patrol who has gone on to make it big in the US. Just as I predicted!
  • January 2nd, 2004. What can I say about Coheed and Cambria? They’re one of my favorite finds of the past year.
  • January 10th, 2004. This week featured Danger Mouse and Jemini. It was shortly after that The Grey Album broke big.
  • February 27th, 2004. Broke “Float On” by Modest Mouse, much to the delight of many folks who’d not heard it yet. This one generated quite a few comments.

Wow, when I look back there was so much good music there and I can’t help but think about all the artists and songs that didn’t get mentioned.

Here’s to another year! I hope y’all enjoy it as much as I do.

Just want to say thanks for your SOWs - certainly broadened my musical spectrum, and introduced me to some artists I would probably have never encountered otherwise. Keep ‘em rolling out!

I’ve really enjoyed your song of the week Keith. So much so, that I often think about ripping you off and doing it myself. Ooops - did I say that out loud?

Keep it up! :o)

You have some great artists there! Have you heard Copeland? They are incredible. Also Death Cab for Cutie is similar in genre to ones you have mentioned.

Jon – feel free to rip it off! The more the merrier.

Josh – I’v not heard Copeland, but I’ll check them out. As far as Death Cab goes. Already did them! ;)

I second the Death Cab for Cutie reference. I just heard a timely song called “Hiway 9” by Eliza Gilkyson [http://elizagilkyson.com/]. Its a tongue in cheek take on the War in Iraq - if such a thing is possible.

It’s also my actual birthday today.

Is there an archive of previous SOTW?

David – Happy Birthday man.

As far as an archive, I assume you mean of the streaming songs? And, no, I only keep a few in there at a time, for a few reasons. Sorry about that.

Yeah, that’s what I meant.

Over in Europe, we don’t have the iTunes store; so it’s a pain in the ass to get the individual tracks that you like.
