Soulseek for Mac OSX

May 10, 2004 | Comments 20 Comments

I spent quite a bit of time mucking around with terminal, Fink, X11 and the OSX developer tools this weekend trying to get Nicotine, the OSX version of Soulseek, to work. I couldn’t do it, even using the moron instructions.

Then, today, I came across this very easy to install and run version. It was up and running lickety-split.

I really, really wish people would title their pages better. I wasted hours on something that, if I’d have been able to find it, would have taken me all of about 10 minutes to get up and running.

For those of you who don’t know, Soulseek is a pretty nifty free file sharing application. If you’re looking for an alternative to Acquisition or Limewire you should give it a try. It’s still very beta but seems to work decently and at the very least it offers another option for file sharing to Mac users.

Awesome. I’d been missing Soulseek since switching over to the OSX laptop.

You rock, Keith — thanks.

Does souseek use a different net than Acquisition (gnutella)??? And if so, is at as big as the gnutella net??

Ethan - No problem.

jens - I think it does, but I don’t know. I do know that I can find things I couldn’t find before and it give the option to download whole folders, etc. Give it a look…

I’ve used pretty much every Mac P2P I could find. Haven’t tried Nicotine yet (hadn’t found it till now :)), but I’ll give it a shot.

I’ve been pretty satisfied with Poisoned (http://www.gottsilla.net/poisoned.php). Give it a shot. It connects to FastTrack (the Kazaa network), Gnutella, and a few others. Future versions promise to add new networks to the program.

I don’t usually like the multi-protocol programs, but Poisoned just does it for me.

The other one I’ve tried which works pretty well is Drumbeat (http://www.drumbeat.info/). However, the program is thick-headed and slow, even on my new Mac (which is at least two years younger than the program in question), and the interface is absolutely hideous. And, of course, there’s a price (too high, considering the functional competition is free).

Excellent - I’d been using Virtual PC with Soulseek up until I found this, which (obviously) was a bit of a pain.

Easy to set up and use and a much easier install than other versions I’ve seen.

A million thank you’s. Fink and its variants had very nearly done my head. Let me know if you need a kidney or someone to bear your children.

New to mac but old user of soulseek on pc.

Is this the best way to get soulseek as I don’t want to mess up my new mac?

Are there any other projects/applications worth waiting for to get soulseek?

Are there any mac oxs music sharers with the same kind of (dance) music on?

Latest comments would be appreciated

Thanks for the invaluable advice re Soulseek. Easy to use/Install with easy to use readme files etc. The other option via Fink and Terminal und OSX where far to complicated and instable. I am new to Soulseek on Mac. I have been using Aquisition/iSwipe before. Keep up the good work - Cheers

Question: Is this a Panther-only solution? I’m running 10.2.8 at the moment…

I’ve been using SolarSeek all day. works great and you don’t have to get all geeky and run the risk of screwing up your mac. I’m running Panther. Not sure if it works as well on older OSX versions.

Thanks for all the above info. I have downloaded X11, and Nicotine from this link, and it kind of works. But it is slow and sometimes doesn’t come up with anything when i search, when i know that it should.

In the bottom of the window it says: ‘Note: exact filename searches are disabled at the moment’. I don’t know if this is relevant to the programme not really working, but does anyone have any suggestions?

Cheers

Anna

I think solarseek is the most user friendly, easy to set up app for soul seek.. No need for x11 and other additional fiddling. it’s the way it was meant to be.

Reading this page took me back to the age of 10 on christmas eve.

Not being able to connect / get online was like getting a pair of socks on the big day.

Can anybody help me?

I have downloaded both Nicotine and x11 but it would seem I am not connected.

What do I have to do to get searching..

SolarSeek (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/24176) is much easier to get going. Nicotine is a bit of a hassle.
