Summer Begins With A Road Trip

Wow. What a weekend. I’m exhausted. I went out to The Gorge in Eastern Washington for what turned out to be an amazing show and an all around great time.
A few of us loaded up my brother’s old school conversion van and hit the road. It was raining in Seattle, but ended up being hot and pretty nice over there. We drank beers, blew some bubbles, met lots of cool people and soaked up a bit of sun before we were treated to one of the best shows I’ve seen in years.
The Postal Service was absolutely amazing and I feel very, very lucky to have caught them as they don’t plan on playing again any time soon. Soon after they left the stage The Roots came on and preceded to put on one of the very best shows I’ve seen — ever. It was that good.
I knew The Roots put on a good show, as I’ve seen them before, but this time they totally blew me away. If you ever get a change to see them, take it.
Ah, yeah, good times. Well, enjoy these few photos I took over there! Back to real life.

I lived in Eastern Washington (Kennewick to be exact) for about 5 months a couple years ago and drove the Gorge on the way to Portland every few weekends. Next to the Blue Ridge Parkway, it is easily one of the prettiest drives I’ve ever made. That surfboard/kite thing seemed to be the cool thing to do back then - I always saw dozens of people doing it on any given weekend. That still the case?

There’s a lot of life over here in Spokane these days. The Roots put on a good show at our new downtown venue The Big Easy last Wednesday. It was The Roots and an intimate crowd of about 1,500 for about 3 hours. Gorge shows are great for the tons of talent and enjoyable style, but for great music I don’t think you can beat a small nightclub. Seattle may have more than us, but we’re workin’ what we got!

We wound up camping at the Wild Horse campground a few miles away, so I had to miss out on seeing you and the van. ;[
I thought it was a great festival, though last year’s is pretty much impossible to beat. The Postal Service were good but weren’t the highlight for me… The Shins and the New Pornographers, on the other hand, were superb.
The weather even held out until the drive back on Sunday afternoon!
