The Normal YearsThe Artist: Built To Spill
The Song: Car
The Album: The Normal Years
Released 1996

It’s that time of year again and one of my favorite times to be here in Seattle; summer is still a ways from over (we’ve got an “indian summer” here) and it’s Labor Day weekend.

Oh, how I love Labor Day weekend in Seattle, because Labor Day weekend in Seattle means it’s time for BUMBERSHOOT!—one of the best arts and music festivals in the whole world.

Aside from the beer, the food, the art, and the company, Bumbershoot really is about the music. Every year brings a whole new crop of artists to the NW, many of them play the “official” event and many more play the clubs and stages around Seattle.

This years line up is great. We’ve got The Pixies, The Killers, Public Enemy (!!!), Nas, Seal, The Black Keys, Face To Face, Ben Kweller, The Girls, and lots more.

As with every year, there are also some great local artists this year; Death Cab For Cutie, Critters Buggin, The Presidents of The USA, The Divorce, and Sky Cries Mary to name a few.

And, just like last year I’m going to showcase a song from one of these local artists playing the festival. This time it’s one of my all time favorites—Built To Spill.

Doug Martsch is one of the best songwriters I can think of and “Car” is one of the best songs he’s ever written. The Normal Years is a true classic and one of my favorite albums. If you’re a fan on indie music, amazing arrangement and stellar song-writing you probably already have it, and if you don’t you should get it.

Enjoy your weekend, wherever you are. Wish you were here in Seattle with me drinking beer, eating great food and, of course, listening to amazing music. Cheers!

Recommended if you like: Doug Martsch, Modest Mouse, Death Cab For Cutie, The Postal Service, The Divorce

I just got a chance to see Build to Spill last month here in Sacramento, it was my first time seeing them. I enjoyed the show, played a lot of old tunes I haven’t heard before as well as the more popular stuff. He said they were releasing a new album soon, and played some tunes from that as well, I liked them and look forward to getting the new album. Enjoy the festival, Public Enemy should be great too.

BTS is great, but I can’t wait for that Postal Service song to go away. Bleah.

I hope Chuck D actually raps over an instrumental record. When I saw PE many years ago, they pretty much just played the record – with vocals – and Chuck rapped over it. I was quite disappointed.

I wish Seattle wasn’t a 6 hour drive for me. Critters Buggin are great. I saw them once in Eugene and loved it. Skerik made it to my town once, but the band hasn’t yet. A lot of energy in their shows. New CD almost out too. :)

I would show up simply to see The Killers, undoubtedly one of the most promising artists in the past 10 years.

I was surprised to see an older album make SOW, but what a great choice! It would be hard to pick a bad song by them. Built to Spill has long been at the top of my favorite band list and I’ll see them as often as I get the chance.
