Davidson Details ABC News Redesign

Mike Davidson has taken the time to write up a post detailing some of the behind the scenes workings of the recent ABC News redesign he worked on.
It doesn’t go into great detail, but it is a nice case study of the realities of putting Web standards and best practices into play on a real project. He speaks about the business realities and organizational challenges (things like advertising and and virtual teamwork) that make the kinds of project so complicated and how they went about dealing with them.
It’s an interesting read. Worth checking out.

Nice work and good effort. We definitely need more examples like this.
The only point that confuses me is ‘standards’. Best practices - sure. Web standards (formal meaning) - no. I ranted about it on Mike’s site already.
Is is so hard not to confuse those things?

Is there some webpage where we can go to vote for you being coolest standards guy of the year? Cos if there is, lemme know, I’m voting!
I’ve seen the future, and it ain’t Zeldman!

I don’t have any problem with the site not validating… I’ve handed over templates in the past to have them butchered by the content folk and there is really nothing to be done about it - too many people on tight deadlines who just want to get their job done and go home. Most of the errors on the ABC site are in the urls, which are likely to be generated by the deepest embedded code. I know what Rimantas means about ‘web standards’ vs ‘best practice’ but I don’t think we need any more terms to confuse people with. Strive for standards and you follow best practice, even if your code doesn’t validate… It’s not ideal but such is life! Good job to the team at ABC.

ABC News Unveils Web Site Redesign
ABCNews.com unveiled a totally redesigned web site. “We’ve made our pages easier to read, given you more options for customizing the news, and provided better tools to help you find the information you’re looking for (even if you’re not sure what that is) and improved the technology that lets us show you what is going on,” the site’s executive producer says. I love the streamlined navigation and light colors.
