The Artist: Smoosh
The Song: It’s Cold
The Album: She Like Electric
Released 2004
Ovet the next few weeks I’m going to showcase a bit of Seattle’s local talent. I hope y’all don’t mind. We’re going to kick it off with Smoosh, my current favorite “band.” I’ll try not to gush to much, it’s really about the music and Smoosh is one you really need to give a listen to.
There has been quite a bit of well deserved hype in the Seattle scene around this raw and talented duo. I think I’m a bit late to the party, but I can’t be more happy to be here. Sisters Asya and Chloe who make up Smoosh put a big smile on my face every time I listen and they represent what’s great about great music.
Their debut album She Like Electric has been very well received and they’ve been opening up for some pretty amazing artists over the last year or so. Bands like Death Cab For Cutie (who’s drummer Jason McGerr taught Chloe how to drum), Pearl Jam and Cat Power.
I think most would put them in the indie pop category, right in there with bands like New Pornographers, The Shins, Death Cab for Cutie and Sleater Kinney. I can see that, but to me they’ve got a kind of young Tori Amos backed by The Posies feel and sound. At least on some tracks (This week’s “It’s Cold” and “Pigmy Motorcycle”), others are just plain fun (“Rad” and “The Quack”) and all have a sound that is distinctly their own.
It’s pop but it’s stipped down to its most endearing elements. Drum, keys and beatutiful vocals combine to create the freshest songs I’ve heard in a long time. If you’re looking for something new, different and fun, look no further than Smoosh.
I very highly recommend this album to pretty much anyone. Give it a listen, I’m pretty sure you’ll be hooked.
Recommended if you like: Cat Power, Tori Amos, The Shins, Death Cab For Cutie, Sleater Kinney, The New Pornographers

Well, yeah, I did that on purpose, pretty much because I think their music stands on their own, you know? But it is pretty amazing.

Woah. That’s all I can say. Woah.
Yesterday, I promised myself no new CD purchases until after the New Year. Whoops, I just ordered Smoosh’s cd. Oh well, it’s only money.
Thanks Keith!

Man, when I heard her voice I just thought “Why isn’t this kiddie music? This is actually quite good.” It’s surreally good :)
You might be interested in Mirah: http://www.krecs.com/mp3/Mirah_ColdColdWater.mp3 … I dunno, I just got reminded of her when I read “young Tori Amos”.

You also forgot to give your brother credit for turning you on to them. I guess you did that on purpose too. This cd is great. Though it doesn’t sound like the first Ben Lee record I think they are comparable. Both artists were/are young enough to remember how to have fun and write innocent pop songs while at the same time, talented enough (important ingredient) to structure great songs.

Smoosh Kicks Ass!
I saw them play early last summer and I was completely smitten. It has nothing to do with the age thing or the cute thing either, they are just really that good. I haven’t heard anything this fresh since Cibo Matto.
Smoosh is cool.

Not a bad sound at all.
Their ages bother me though; I have difficulty supporting “kids” - regardless of how good they are - that should really just be having fun being kids, and no where near industry in general, never mind the music industry.
I’ll admit that they’re good though.

This album has been getting a lot of play time at our local college radio station in San Luis Obispo, CA. I hope it doesn’t effect their innocense too much…for now I’d have to say I enjoy it.

This is rather good isn’t it? I had a feeling pressing Play was going to stream MIDI to me (heh, remember 1996) I’m new here, and the song rocks, I’m sure they rock to - browsing there site it is an eye-opener to see how young they are, and to think of the crap I was creating at age 12. Dear lord. Thanks for introducing me. Wonderful.

I’d just like to say that not only is Asy very talented, but she’s also a fabulous friend. She went to school with me and was one of my best friends in 1st grade. We haven’t seen each other for a while, but I’d like to wish her and Chloe the best of luck!

Its amazing what Aysa and Chloe have been able to accomplish as musicians creating such mature music. They are definately a duo to look out for.

Smoosh is like Vanessa Carlton meets Metric or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. and it’s a good thing because they spice it up with some indie rock to it. when I first heard “La Pump” I was totally hooked on it.. DEAD SERIOUS!!! I still can’t believe thier Pre-teens. I never heard anything like Smoosh before. It’s about freaking time they put out good quality music like this. Chole’s drummimg is superb. Asya’s voice is poingnant. It made me cry, smile and laugh.. She like electric is the album of the year..

I think they can go very far with their talent, Asya’s voice is beautiful and Chloe can rock on the drums. If they went to the Savemart Center and played, I would go in a NewYork minute. And they are both very cute and my age.
Good Luck To Them!

Ummm….. Hello!! These people stink! The singer is Flat as a peice of paper. I could sing better than them any day. I’m sorry but they are the worse band I have ever heard. When I first heard one of there songs I was like this is the worst song I have ever heard, even Jesse Mcartney Is better than them, And that is saying a lot from my point of view. Sorry but that is me speeking honestly.
Hope you get better!

I have only heard “Massive Cure” but I love it and I am already pumped to get their CD. They are so great! That’s my opinion anyway. I heard of them in some magazines so I listened to the song, and it’s great! I’m also stunned that they are my age–now 11 and 13, i think–and i’m 13–and yet they don’t write crappy obnoxious tweeny-pop like other such singers I know of (Hilary Duff, cough cough). I love them! I hope to hear more.
